shell32.dll reported "changed".... is it an infection ?

I have a new Dell Dimension E521 for 1 month and I have recently noticed that AVG Free is reporting a "change" in shell32.dll at each daily scan. It says however that it found no threat.

Before saving a HiJackThis log, I followed the usual procedure but I have a problem with Panda ActiveScan : it cannot complete the scan. Every time I try to run it, it stalls while scanning "c:\ntldr", then shuts Internet Explorer without warning.
The weird part of it is that there is no such file or folder as "c:\ntldr" on my hard disk; the only result of a search is a file named "NTLDR" located in the "c:\i386" folder, which was installed by Dell.

Can someone have a look at my log and tell me if I got infected ?
Thank you

Sorry for the delay Streamsz.

I don't see any signs of infection. Let's get a different scans opinion.
  • Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
  • Download the AVG Anti-Spyware Installer to you Desktop.
    • Find the icon on your desktop and double click on it to install.
    • Let AVG AS open once it is installed.
    • The first thing you need to do is update the detection definition files.
    • From the main AVG AS screen, click on UPDATE in the top menu, then click the Start Update link.
    • After the update finishes (the status bar near the top will inform you of progress), click on the Scanner button in the top menu, then click on the Settings tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports"
      • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
      • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
    • Close AVG AS.
  • Reboot into safe mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  • Open AVG AS and click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run.
    • If AVG AS finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
  • Reboot to normal mode.
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.
  • Post Logs
    • AVG AS Results
    • New Hijack This Log

Hello Scott and thank you for your reply,

I immediately followed your instructions.
It looks like AVG AS found no threat either :whistling:

If my system is clean, this leaves me however with the same 2 questions :

1. why is AVG Free reporting a change in shell32.dll at every daily scan ?
2. why is Panda ActiveScan always interrupting at the same point ? (see my 1st post)

Thanks again for helping. Here are the logs you requested :
(sorry the AVG AS log is in french, but as you will see it is empty)

1. why is AVG Free reporting a change in shell32.dll at every daily scan ?

Not sure about this. First I've ever heard of it doing that. The file, shell32.dll, is a library which contains Windows Shell API functions, which are used when opening web pages and files. This could be related to malware changing something but I imagine the change could be legit as well. I'll double check on this one.

2. why is Panda ActiveScan always interrupting at the same point ? (see my 1st post)

It could be locked and freezing Panda. However, scans that don't run all the way through could also be malware related. Don't think it is here though. NTLDR (abbreviation of NT Loader) is the boot loader for Windows NT and is also a legit, system file though it,as you pointed out, should not be located at C:\ntldr.

AVG was most assuredly clean as well. How long has the problem been going on? The whole month or just since you installed AVG?

Let's get a scan that will give us some info on what's been changed file wise over the last 30 days.
  • Please download Comboscan to your desktop.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on comboscan.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, a text file will open - ComboScan.txt
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of ComboScan.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
  • A folder, C:\ComboScan, will also open. In it will be another text file, Supplementary.txt.
  • Please also copy the contents of Supplementary.txt to your post as well.
Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.
What ComboScan will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. ComboScan automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Hi Scott,

How long has the problem been going on? The whole month or just since you installed AVG?

I installed AVG the day I got that new computer.
However, I can't say if it was reporting that change in shell32.dll since that day, because at the end of the scan it is just saying "No threat found".
I happened to notice the problem when I opened the AVG window during the scan and I saw it was mentioning a change in that file.

I join the results of Comboscan as an attachment because when I paste them here my post appears empty (?)

Thanks again

You could try uninstalling and reinstalling AVG. Just be sure to disconnect from the internet before hand that way nothing gets in. See if it keeps reporting it after that.

Still not sure about the Panda Scan.

I'll keep looking.

I will try uninstalling/reinstalling AVG as you suggested, and I will let you know if there is any change.

Any other idea will be welcomed, from you or one of your colleagues.

Thanks again for all the good job :whistling:

Found some info on AVG's Forum that may solve this problem. Check out post's 8 and 9 by Libra1 and jabarnut respectively. They suggest accepting the change and it should stop detecting it. If that doesn't work you can try deleteing the file:

AVG7QT.DAT

Further reading shows it might be a sign that a system file has been changed due to an update or something long those lines. Deleteing the above file and then rebooting should cause it to be recreated and could possibly stop that warning. Uninstalling and reinstalling would also accomplish this as well.

I don't feel it's malware related.

Let me know if that helps. I'll continue checking around in the meantime and I'll also pose it to some of the other staff members.

Thanks for all your research Scott

I did read the posts on AVG forum and I feel relieved... at least the change in shell32.dll doesn't mean there is any malware involved. This is the main point, isn't it ?

Although I followed all the instructions from the posts there, I could not get that "Warning" window and "accept the change", but I'm not worrying anymore. Maybe I will delete the AVG7QT.DAT file to see if it helps, but somehow the problem has lost its cruciality for me.

I will let you know in any case.

Thank you again for a good and thorough job :whistling:

I would say so. I have done some other reading and further believe that it is OK.

I will let you know in any case.

Very good. I'll go ahead and get you my prevention speech below but I'll leave the thread open for a few days in case something comes up.

Thanks for all your research Scott
