Hello,

I have completed the mulitple step process you recommended and have successfully cleaned out numerous bots and viruses (below is a the output from PandaSoft active scan showing some culprits). When I do spyware scans now, now come up clean. The system often runsa at normal speeds, but

- The system hangs frequently
- Norton Internet security won't uninstall or reinstall from disk.
- I am wait for the green light to from you to go to XP service pack 2

I suspect the registry has lingering damage. The "hijack this" output is below. Can you help? Is my computer clean?

- Alan

Turn off system restore and set new restore points. Here are the directions.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

We are making progress. :tazz:

I modified the registry as you suggested. I could not get PandaSoftware anti-virus scan to run, but I am having better luck with Norton Internet security and Norton Anti-virus 2002. I was able to remove the old instance, and reinstall and update those. A scan revealed 723 problems. About 400 were fixed and the rest seeming quarantined. Both Internet Security and Anti-virus are now enabled.

The only problem I know of right now is that Norton continuous alerts for a virus identified as w32.PIFI (object c:\winNT\temp\oha3.tmp). When I close the alert window a replacement alert immediately pops up.

The new HijackThis log file is below. I captured it before, I remove and re-installed Norton.

Do you think it is safe from me install Window SP2 yet?

FYI, I still need to switch to Firefox and Sun Java, in case that plays into your planning.

Thank-you so much for your help.

I may have had a typo in the last email. The virus alert may have been "w32.pinfi" rather than what I said before. I am trying to confirm the truth, then I'll add another reply. Sorry for any confusion. :tazz:

Open your task manager (ctrl, alt, del) and stop this process:

taskbarmngr.exe

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows ms Update] DEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ{|}~Tw4w
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows ms Update] DEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ{|}~Tw4w
O23 - Service: Windows Taskbar Manager (wtaskbarmngr) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\taskbarmngr.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Hello,

Slow progress. Taskbarmnger still lives. I didn't have any luck finding the files I was supposed to search for.

I seemed to have killed w32.pinfi. Can I go to XP SP2 yet?

Turn off system restore.

How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;310405

Run Hijack this and put a check mark next to this one:

O23 - Service: Windows Taskbar Manager (wtaskbarmngr) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\taskbarmngr.exe (file missing)

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\WINNT\taskbarmngr.exe

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and we'll remove what's left. :tazz:

;)

Thanks for your help to date. This thread has been about addressing problems on my father's computer. So far, I have put in about 16 hours of work it. Since I just had child number two a week ago, my old man figured he should relieve me working on his machine, and hired a local consultant to wrap up this project.

The guy told me we had things pretty well cleaned up. I think he fixed the taskbarmngr problem. In any event, he upgrade the machine to XP SP2, once he thought it was safe. The computer is now stabilized and protected as far I am concerned.

I am very greatful for your help and would like to know what sort of donation typical for the help you have given me.

Regards,

Alan
