:blink: Can anyone help? I have tried all the so-called solutions and nothing seems to work I dont have a proxy anyway!, I have spent 2 days trying to fix this!! :whistling:

Hi. We'll need a bit more information to be able to figure out a solution for you.

Please give us some background on this problem.

1. What is the computer doing when you receive this error?

2. How long has it been happening?

3. If you can determine a date that the error started, can you determine anything at all that happened on your system just prior?

4. Is your Operating System XP Home or Professional? Is it totally up-to-date with service packs and critical updates?

it happens every time I try to use windows update , I cant update at all, the last time anything was updated successfully was around Jan 6th and it was around a couple of weeks later that I started getting the message. I think maybe a Norton anti virus programme was downloaded around that time. Ive tried using the restore option but I cant get the computer to go back further than 3 weeks ago!

its a home XP and there are no latest critical updates since 6th Jan

You said you don't have a proxy server. Is this a home PC or work PC?

Specific Troubleshooting Items for Error 0x8024402c

From MS Article 883821:
(If you didn't do this, go ahead and do it, just to rule it out)
0x8024402C or 0x8024502d error codes
To resolve these errors, remove characters from the proxy exception list, and then clear the proxy cache. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advance.
4. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
5. Quit Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command. • proxycfg -d
• net stop wuauserv
• net start wuauserv

General Troubleshooting Items for Microsoft Update Problems

Step 1
Start >Run, type
regsvr32 jscript.dll

Clear the temporary file and restart the hotfix installation or the service pack installation

To do this, follow these steps: 1. Move all the tmp*.cat files out of the following folders:
%systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}
%systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

2. Type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
net stop cryptsvc
rename the %systemroot%\system32\CatRoot2 %systemroot%\system32\oldcatRoot2
net start cryptsvc

3. Restart the failed hotfix installation or service pack installation.
Clear all files in the software distribution folder
To do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. In the Services (Local) pane, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Stop.
3. Minimize the Services (local) window.
4. Select all the contents of the Windows distribution folder, and then delete them.
Note By default, the Windows distribution folder is located in the drive:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. In this location, drive is a placeholder for the drive where Windows is installed. 5. Make sure that the Windows distribution folder is empty, and then maximize the Services (local) window.
6. In the Services (Local) pane, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Start.
7. Restart the computer, and then run Windows Update again.
