This is not an uncommon problem. Microsoft has provided a tool:

Download/install/run Installer Cleanup Utility.
It will provide a list of applications for which Windows Installer has files. One click on the old program name to highlight, and then select "Remove." Do not use this tool on a program that is current and valid. It will be necessary to re-install any program that this tool removes.
