OK.... I am not sure what to do anymore. Please help. I was given an Inspirion 5100 (Dell) Laptop to repair. That part went well and good. All is fixed now except for this one nagging issue. After learning that the Laptop was never updated from Windows XP Pro to the current upgrades (which took me to SP2), I let the update page install all necessary files. Now the external mouse connected to the USB port through a mouse/keyboard PS2 conversion cable doesn't work anymore. I updated all files off the Dell support page, BIOS, chipset and anything else that made sense. Still won't work. The only item that works is the Synaptics touchpad. There doesn't appear to be a BIOS setting that is mis-set. I am just confused. Nothing I tried has worked.

Please help, anyone.

Thanks.

Bill.

Those free (usually purple or green) PS2/USB adaptors are very unreliable. You could buy a better quality one or do the sensible thing and just buy a "native" USB mouse. It's not a big outlay is it?

Well.... wrong answer..... the mouse worked before the updates were installed and the connector still works on another laptop I have. I'm looking for help were there might have been a registry entry that is hosing eveything up. This response was not helpful at all.
