Hello,

I have a Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.4.8. I also own an Eye TV digital tuner, which is fantastic, but my library of recordings is taking up all my hard disk space! I was wondering if there is a way of compressing them, so I can burn onto DVD using Toast ( I can at the moment, but some files are too big and titanium won't compress them!). They are ".eyetv" files.

Also is there a way of converting them to other more common movie files like MPEGs?

Sounds like it's time to get a good external hard drive. You can get ones that are mac compatable and some with a firewire connector.

Yeah, that's a good idea! Unfortunately, I already have an external hard drive and that is full too! I don't have enough money to buy another at the moment... can you help me out or was that your best suggestion?!

if you just want compression you could try zipping the files before burning them

You could take a look at Mplayer for Mac with Mencoder it a nice tool for media. I don't know if it has a GUI frontend for the Mac.

Doesnt work! Perhaps if I rephrase my question:

1. Is there a way to convert eyetv files to standard video formats??

2. Is there a way to compress these standard videos, so that more may be stored on my computer?

I think this makes my problem clearer perhaps??

Would appreciate any advice - understand that this site is geared towards PC users though...

I'm not all that familiar with the Mac and it's software. Eyetv seems to have the ability to convert between formats (here) and you should be able to transcode from AVI or mpeg4 to a more compressed format like Divx.
