Hey all,



So I have a laptop here. When the printer (USB) gets plugged in, the mouse(USB) likes to stop working. I'm thinking it might be an IRQ issue, but I wanted to consider some other alternatives first. The laptop is remote, so I have not seen it myseld yet, but I will soon.



Anyone have any suggestions as to why a mouse would stop functioning when the printer gets plugged in?

If it's an optical mouse it draws power from the USB port. If the printer is also drawing power power from the USB it may be getting priority over the mouse, draining all the available power shared by the USB ports (which isn't much) so there's none for the mouse. not many people get this problem with a laptop as it's uncommon for a printer to be attached to it.

If that is the problem, you can solve it by attaching a USB hub which connects to a mains supply, then plugging the printer into that.

Hi there

One way to check to see if its actually an issue with your mouse is to run a different mouse with a ps/2 connection and see if that fixes the problem. Me is thinking that 2 usb devices plugged into the laptop are connecting to each other and are trying to make conversations which doesn't usually work out well.

I'm headed there tomorrow. Not sure how to look at this problem. The printer has been plugged into the laptop before without fault. Methinks it has something to do with the user. Maybe. I'll find out tomorrow I guess.
