Installing windows using external drive

Ok, So i'm on my brothers PC. He has one of those external hard drive things. I plugged in my new hard drive into it, and if i put the windows XP cd can I install windows JUST on that drive? its partitioned but in an older thread i mentioned that it no longer works installing it so i am thinking of alternatives to get windows onto it.
So, using this pc can I install windows onto THAT drive without formatting the rest? It is a seperate drive altogether

Microsoft's official stance is that installing and booting Windows from a USB drive is not possible, but the tutorial here proves them wrong (apparently):
