I am very new to networking & can't completely understand what is being explained in other posts. Would someone be willing to walk me through setting up my network in the simplest way possible?

My Desktop is running XP. My laptop is running Vista. My router is Linksys.

My printer is connected directly to my desktop & is set to share. My documents on my desktop are also set to share.

My network map on my laptop only shows the laptop to the router to the internet. When I click on the Local Area Connection, it says the adapter is not connected.

Please let me know of any other info that you need from me. Thanks.
