I was recently infected with some form of malware that has put a red wallpaper on my desktop with a black box inside it saying Danger: Spyware. In the box there are two links to spyware removal tools. My original desktop is gone and all that was left was the recycle bin, internet explorer, share to the web folder, and microsoft outlook icon. At first my computer would automatically reboot after a given period of time or if I double clicked any of the desktop icons. Somehow by reading some of the post i was able to removed the hideous red wallpaper but still not being able to rightclick and some how stopped the computer by rebooting. I have tried NAV, AVG, Ad-aware, Spybot too some success. I deleted all the dialers and trojans that NAV and AVG found and i deleted all the spyware Ad-aware and spybot found but i am still not able to rightclick and removed this impersonator desktop that duplicated all the icons i add. But when i go to documents and setting to my user name and to desktop my original icons are there.

Please any help would be appreciated.

Welcome tuffgong87 to Geeks to Go!

You have gathered a whole bunch of trouble.

We will try to do a combined cleaning.

Download CWShredder, update it.
Don't run it yet. We'll use it later.

***

Download 'SpSeHjfix' to the desktop.
Rightclick a blank part of the desktop and select new folder, call it ‘spfix’.
Unzip the file into that folder. Don't use it yet. We'll use it later.

***

Download slimshieldfixXP.reg to your desktop.
Don't use it yet. We'll use it later.

***

Download CleanUp!.
If the link doesn´t work, download it from here.
Don't run the program, we'll do that later.

***

Download Pocket Killbox.
Unzip the files to a folder like c:\killbox\
Don't run the program, we'll do that later.

***

Once you downloaded everything, move on to my next post.

First, read through this part and the next. See if you understand what I'm asking you to do. Post any question prior to starting of.

Once you start, mark each and any line as you go, making sure nothing is missed.

***

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run 'SpSeHjfix' and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your computer to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers, it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

***

Now run the CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

***

Open HijackThis.
Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake.
some entries may already be gone, due to the above taken step. Just move on to the next item.

***

Find slimshieldfixXP.reg and doubleclick it. Say 'yes' when you are asked for permission to add this to your registry.

***

To change the desktop setting, click the Start button then choose Settings...Control Panel. Double-click the Display icon, then click the Settings tab.
Go to the tab desktop, adjust/change desktop. Go to the tab Website. Uncheck anything you find and choose 'remove'.
I hope the names are correct, I use a different language.

***

Find and doubleclick the file cleanup312.exe.

Go to option
Select ‘custom’
Put a check to:

* Temp
* All users.

Press 'cleanup!'

Once it's done, decline to log off. We will reboot later.

***

Run Killbox (doubleclick Killbox.exe).

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time. When you're done, say Yes. The system will now reboot to normal mode.

***

Please do an online scan, 2 would be better,

Trend Micro Housecall
Panda online scan

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

***

Reboot again. Post back here in this topic (use the button 'add reply'). Post me the log SpSeHjfix made. Also post a fresh log using HijackThis.

If you have any comment on the fixes, please post them. Let me know.

Weldone, your log looks clean! :tazz:

Let clean up a bit:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Performance and Maintenance.
3. Click Free up space on your hard disk.

The Disk Cleanup dialog box appears.
4. On the Disk Cleanup tab, select the following check boxes:
* Downloaded Program Files
* Temporary Internet Files
* Temporary Files
* Temporary Offline Files
* Offline Files
5. Click OK to delete the files from these locations.
6. When prompted, click Yes start the disk cleanup.

***

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

    Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
