Hi guys I have a question for you all; here is the thing.
Today morning I turned on my computer and all the folders and files on the root directory (C:\) were on muy desktop suddenly; I could have removed them, but they`re not shortcut icons to the folders and files but the folders and files themselves !!! so if I delete them I will be deleting the files and folders, and I don't want that of course. Also I could take off all the shortcut icons but I don't want that either because of the recycle byn and others I really want to be on my desktop.
Can anybody help me on this issue; or give me some advice to solve it?? Thanx a lot :whistling:

Try System Restore, choose a date that's just before the problem appeared.

Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore.

Thanx pip22 that would be great if I wouldn't have disabled the option, (I forgot to tell you that in the topic) because it brings more troubles than solutions; Any other suggestions? Please??

Hi 1ukaz...

Sometimes the System Restore feature can really save your bacon...and probably would have in this situation. Do you have your XP installation cd?

Just trying to reason this out. "Desktop" is a folder in C:\Documents and Settings\Username. The contents of that folder are displayed as default in what we call the visible "Desktop." So what you have described to my understanding is that the entire contents of C:\ were somehow moved into the "Desktop"folder and now appear on the visible screen. Is it not possible to open the root C:\ drive folder and the "Desktop" folder and drag everything back out? Am I misunderstanding something here?

OK, but it's not just a folder.... there are several desktop.ini around the system folders... and the problem is that somehow the pointers of the desktop are to the root ....but may be it could have been usefull, but it didn't
Thanx anyway

I don't think I still have the whole picture. You say you have desktop.ini outside the desktop folder on C:\ root? Those should be deleteable.

Sounds like a malware changed the system location of the desktop folder location, like certain applications can do (IE Tune Up utilities)
