Hello Peter

What we need is tools > Internet options >connections Tab> Lan settings>
make sure that auto detect settings, use auto config script & use a proxy server are all unticked.
Click ok close Ie 7 then restart IE7

Checked there - all were unticked already.
From what I've been reading it could be Zone Alarm 'left overs' again - possibly
I had set a restore point before I started the update - would it be best to try that, then completely delete ZA ? (I confess here I'd forgotten to get rid of it!)
There have been no replies in the 'Web' thread yet

Thanks - seems as though we are going for the worlds longest thread !

Hi Chris

Good lad your learning
instead of system restore lets uninstall
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
c. In the list of programs, click Windows Internet Explorer 7, and then click Remove.
d. Follow the wizard instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 7.

Cheers

Not exactly a lad (maybe 40 years ago) but I've had a good teacher recently! :whistling:

Did that and have gone back to IE 6 and can see the WWW again using that browser. :help:

Shall I go ahead with the Zone Alarm delete now ?

Then what do you suggest - I do want IE 7 and Firefox for better security I've got used to it on the other machine.

Should any of this go into the other thread ?

THANKS yet again ! How can one PC user have so much (bad) luck. :help:

I've uninstalled/deleted Z A using your instructions (bet your happy now!) and run the MS update to install IE7.
IE 7 now works  and I've set a restore point. :whistling: I'll load the IE 7 updates now.
I notice in msconfig - startup this item still exists zclient "C:\Program files\Zone labs\zone alarm\zlclient.exe" but its not ticked and does not exist in 'Program files' There are no Zone Alarm items in msconfig - services.

Can I try loading Firefox now ?- is there anything special to this ?

I'm so pleased - sarcasm !!!

Still no Nickyboy

I did see his ID browsing this thread a few days ago.
I've been looking at other PC 'help forum' sites and there are lots of queries about the BThomehub in the 'File Save As' forum. So its not just me.

Thank you for staying with me.

No just download and install.

BThomehub in the 'File Save As' forum

Yeah I have seen this forum - maybe I should join that one :whistling:

If it's not broken don't fix it.

Hi Peter
I've loaded Firefox - it works ok  You recomend making it my default don't you ?
As far as you know are there any problems using add on toolbars - Site advisor and Google for example ?
Still no replies to my IE 7 thread Good job you are prepared to help :whistling:

A corrupt windows install that is why you could not get the connection via cable to work

This from a while back does this happen often in your experience? MS always makes things sound so easy :help:

One thing about the network (don't panic thats my job !) Sometimes they seem to take a long time to see each other and the Dell sometimes cant see the Systemax at all.
Is this because I'm not waiting long enough after boot up for them to make contact properly ?
The Systemax is always a bit slow doing anything - its only got a 1.7GHz CPU - It takes much longer to show the WiFi tray icons.

Thanks so much.

Hi Chris
Sorry I missed this bit.

Dell sometimes cant see the Systemax at all.

Next time this happens do an ipconfig /all on both machines and check the subnet mask

Hello Peter

I wasn't trying to hassle you it was just so unusual for you not to reply I thought you might be ill or away from home/work.

Well I think that the networking thread is finished  :whistling: - I have a couple of other queries not related to this problem but I'll open new threads for them and see what advice I get.

So thank you very much for all your help and advice over the past weeks. I'm going to post a 'Thank you' thread so that everyone knows how much you have done to help. :help:

THANKS
