What exactly is the logon screen you want to see?

What is the difference between the desktop you are getting without logging on and the one you see when logging on?

One says WELCOME TO WINDOWS

the other says ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD

the login screen I want to see is enter network password which is required for networking. The difference between the new desktop and the one it loges me in to auto, is many of the icons I have already deleted and or have uninstalled and it is completly unorginized from the way I am used to so it is hard for me to find things. Plus it gives me no sercurity for my computer, so any one can read my data.

Remove Client for Microsoft Networks and reinstall it

(btw, there is no security in windows98...someone can walk up to your machine, hit cancel at that logon, logon locally, and read anything you did.

when this first happened I removed it to see if it was the prob. unfortunetly it was not.

How many users are in USERs in control panel
Did you install a program that will log you in automatically? tweakui?

Right click Network Neighborhood, choose properties, choose IDENTIFICATION tab.....are you a member of workgroup?

laying in bed and I wake up at two in the morning and it smacks me in the head what might be wrong (how pathetic is that when I wake up at two in the morning with computer problems in my head?)

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network. Click the appropriate setting in the Primary Network Logon box, and then click OK. Make this Client for Microsoft Networks

Open regedit and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net

Delete the following key in the right pane
AutoLogon=xx (might be xx=00)

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network

Delete the following key
Disable Password Caching
Whether the value is set to 0 or 1, remove it to resolve this issue.

Thanks it worked but I could not find the disable password caching. Now is there any way to speed up my boot because it takes a long time to boot aprox 90 sec. It was booting at about 30 sec before all this happened

Scandisk
defrag
and then search for bootlog analyzer and post the log with delays and errors only (don;t know where you can get it off top of my head, but google knows)

This might be off topic but I went to install a new floppy drive with the cable that came with it and it turned out that it was the wrong cable, now after I removed the drive and now the pc will not boot, the cd drive is not reconezed, and it will not boot to safe mode. I tried to copy possible missing files using C:\copy A:*.*C: but now it boots and shuts down.
