Ive been trying to run a server on my Windows XP PRO sp2 for the last two months, and nothing has worked. I'd set up and configure the server, then get into the router and give the ports permission on both, direct it to the server side, ect. When you access the server in a browser through the router adress(192.168.1.1) itll take you to the root directory, or if you use 127.0.0.1, itll work fine, but when you actually try to access it from the ip (ftp://27.xxx.xx.23.x) it freezes momentarily, starts a search for a connection, then says the operation timed out. Ive tried a few different servers, and it doesnt seem to be a problem with the config or app itself. Ive had problems with windows xp when I ran a game server for ppl to connect to. At first it wouldnt work, but after some trial and error, they were able to access the console. The server will notice that its trying to be accessed, but the user just seems to hang, constantly connecting till it times out.
Heres some specs to help understand.
Using a router, set up with a workaround to open port 21 on my computer
