I am about to reformat one of my computers and was wondering what are some essential things that I need to reput on it or put on before I do anything else. I am giving the computer away so I want to put it all on and be set.
for Windows XP

so far I got:


Adobe Flash Player
Macromedia
Firefox
ATF-Cleaner
Microsoft Office
SpywareBlaster
Update Java
Spybot Search and Destroy
WinPatrol
Spyware Terminator AV and AS
Create solid Restore Points
will update list as I go

Also a question on reformatting. By just putting the Windows CD in I can follow the prompts and reformat that way right? Or do I need something else?

The list looks good.. yeah just make sure the BIOS is set to boot off the CD first, and you should be all set!

(The BIOS can normally be accessed when you start your computer. You may see a reference to "Setup" when you turn your computer on. That’s your opportunity to get into the BIOS. I am I mean after reformatting back it Up in case there ever is a problem I could just import the registry when it was like brand newly reformatted.

Hi,

i quite often reformat PC's and the first thing i ALWAYS do it set a restore point to a completely clean install. then install all the software, updates etc and then create a second restore point.

Also, i know firefox is good, but depending on the people your donating it too, they may use IE and not just ignore firefox! just a thought!

I would definitely add Spybot Search and Destroy. One of the best, if not the best, antispyware programs I know.

WinPatrol is a very nice program for keeping that process list small and is one of the first I install.

I like spyware terminator. Logreeval showed me that one and I am quite pleased on its performance.
