Hello there,

My computer has all of a sudden become infected with a whole bunch of stuff. My homepage ahs changed and I can't change it back. Some triple x website thing has attached itself to my favourites list and I can't get rid of that either!! I've never even looked the website!

I've downloaded a whole heap of spyware things and can't remove anything - they all ask for money! I donwloaded the recomended spyware program - the ad-aware se program and followed all of the steps to do the scan and when the scan starts it gets through about 5 seconds of scanning and then the computer brings up this message to say that it needs to automatically shut down and restart!!

Ive recorded a log of my computer so hopefully someone will be able to sort out my computer as I have no clue!

thank you in advance geeks to go

Courtney

Hi Peanut,

Welcome to Geeks 2 Go. Sorry about the delay in getting to your post, however we have been very busy working through all the logs posted.

If you still need assistance i will be happy to help you.

As it has been sometime since you posted your log, could you please rescan your PC with HJT and post a new log in this thread.

If your problems have now been resolved i would be grateful if you could let me know.

Regards,

Usetobe

Hi Peanut,

Firstly we need to create a new folder on your C drive for Hijackthis (for example C\HJT). Install HJT into that folder and run the program from there. That way it can save backup files if needed.

Print out a copy of these instructions so as to make it easier to follow and so that you can access them when you have to reboot your PC

Download SPYBOT S&D from the following link, install and update it. Then run the program and allow it to fix anything it finds.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3

Carry out a free online virus scan from the following link and allow it to fix anything it may find.

Trend housecall

Reboot your PC into SAFE MODE by tapping the F8 key whilst your PC boots up. Select SAFE MODE.

Open up TASK MANAGER by right clicking bottom toolbar, select TASK MANAGER then Select PROCESSES. Select each of the follow if found and end task each one.

GMT.exe
CMESys.exe

Open up Add/Remove programs in Start/Control Panel and remove the following programs if they exist.

CME II
GMT, GAIN or GATOR
MySearch
Web Related
Soap

Rescan your PC with HJT and check each of the following entries if found. Some may have been removed by the previous processes.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://letgohome.com/sp.htm?id=31403

Ensure that you have no windows open apart from HJT and click on FIX CHECKED.

Set your PC to show hidden files. Click on link below if you do not know how to do this.

How to show hidden files

Using windows explorer locate and delete each of the following folders/files if found.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\GMT.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\SYSTEM~1\soap.exe min
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\SYSTEM~1\soap.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\NJ4KU8~1.DLL
C:\Program Files\Zipclix

Reverse the proceedure of show hidden files to hide them again.

Reboot your PC normally and then rescan with HJT and post the log in this thread.

I'm sorry for the delay in my reposting, I had to work this weekend and have not had time to sit down at the computer until now.

thanks so much for your help so far, i really appreaciate it.

thanks again

Courtney

Hi Courtney,

Firstly, were you able to carry out the SPYBOT and Adaware processes?

Carry out a further free online virus scan from the following link, as you have a new infection that has only just been identified.

Panda Active Scan

Allow it to fix anything it finds.

Rescan with HJT and post the log back in this thread

Regards,

Usetobe

Hi,

As you can probably see, a lot of the adware and junk on your PC relates to File Sharing programs, in particular KAZAA,which installs all manner of nasties.

PRINT OUT A COPY OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS SO THAT YOU HAVE THEM WHEN YOU NEED TO REBOOT

Firstly we shall remove a stubborn backdoor trojan, together with other undisirables that are running.

1. press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, then click the Processes tab.
2. In the list of running programs*, locate any entries for sng.exe.
3. Select it, then press either the End Task. Check to see if any more entries for it are listed and if so end task them all.
4. Select the following entries and end task asm.exe
5. Close Task Manager.

open ADD/REMOVE in Control Panel and if any of the following programs are listed, remove them.

Altnet
Myway
Mybar
pointsmanager

Also please consider removing Kazaa.

Reboot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key whilst your PC starts up. Select SAFE MODE.

Rescan with HJT and check each of the following. Make sure you get them all and not any others by mistake. Some of the entries may no longer be present as the could be removed by previous processes.

[b]R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://letgohome.com/sp.htm?id=31403
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://letgohome.com/sp.htm?id=31403
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://letgohome.com/sp.htm?id=31403
O3 - Toolbar: &SearchBar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Aol Configuration Loader] aimsng.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Aol Configuration Loader] aimsng.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Aol Configuration Loader] aimsng.exe

Ensure that you have no windows open apart from HJT and click on FIX CHECKED.

Now we need to remove the Autostart Entries from the Registry

Removing autostart entries from the registry prevents the malware from executing at startup.

1. Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
2. In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>
Windows>CurrentVersion>Run
3. In the right panel, locate and delete the entry:
Aol Configuration Loader = "aimsng.exe"
4. In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>
Windows>CurrentVersion>RunServices
5. In the right panel, locate and delete the entry:
Aol Configuration Loader = "aimsng.exe"
6. Close Registry Editor.

Set your PC to show hidden files. Click link below if you do not know how to do this.

Show hidden files

Using Windows Explorer locate the following files/folders and if found delete them.

[b]C:\WINDOWS\System32\aimsng.exe
C:\Program Files\Altnet
C:\PROGRA~1\Altnet\DOWNLO~1\asm.exe
C:\Program Files\MyWay
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cd_clint.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Gain Publishing
C:\Program Files\PerfectNav
C:\Program Files\System Soap Pro
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys
C:\Program Files\kazaa\topsearch.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking
C:\Program Files\PerfectNav\BHO\PerfectNav150c.dll

Reverse the procdure of show hidden files to hide them again.

Reboot your PC normally,

Download and run the following program to clean out temp files etc.

cleanup

Rescan with HJT and post the log back in this thread.

Hello,

I've followed your instructions, although doing the clena up thing was a bit scary i'm not exactly sure what it deleted but i'm guessing it was all stuff i didn't need. My sister is the one who uses kazaa so i'll have to ask her to try and delete it. I've scanned again with hijack this and posted the log below.

thanks again for all your help thusfar

Courtney

Hi again :tazz:

Next part

Download Silent Runners
Unzip it to a permanent folder.
Start SilentRunners.vbs
When your antivirus is giving an alert, do not block this. Allow the script.
Copy and paste the content of the txtfile you get afterwards in your next reply.

Close all programs except ad-aware.
Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic

Hello,

well i had alot of trouble with adaware again. To start with I couldn't dowload a new version so i just went into the safe mode and ran the one i had. Then i couldn't update the definitions for it, then when i ran it it didn't work completely. It got through on the scanning but it froze at the end and didn't complete the scan. I even left it on overnight and it didn't finish. So i just did evenything else you said to do and have reposted my log.

Thanks so much for helping me with my computer. I would have had no clue!!

Courtney
