I've just joined, so forgive me if I'm asking old questions.

My Sont VAIO laptop runs XP Pro and Office 2003. My CPU usage has suddenly started climbing to 100% and remaining there for ages. Happens mostly when I boot up and remains in this state from anything between 10 minutes and a couple of hours.

I've scanned with AVG, done all the normal cleanups etc. but to no avail.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Use your task manager to analyze what is using up your CPU.
Can you determine if everything running is necessary?
Change some of running programs from automatic to manual.

You don't need indexing for sure.

My CPU stands at 4 to 7 % right now.
