Cannot close Internet Exploder 6 SP1

The only way I can close an IE 6 window is with "end task". If I just use the close button, the window goes away, but the process keeps running and still shows in the taskbar. If I right-click it in the taskbar and choose "close", I'm told that it's not responding. When I pick "end task", it closes. This has been going on for over a week. Opera is not affected.

I'm running AVG anti-virus and anti-spyware, plus I run SpyBot and SpywareGuard and am behind a NAT router / firewall. I do not use Outlook or OE. This is on a Win2K machine.

Any suggestions?
