if the tcip failed.
1)did you install the vista drivers on the desktop as desentte said.
2)when we set the tcpip address and chose Raw we can try LPR
3) have you plugged the lap top into the vista machine - just to see if the vista driver works?

Also please check this
You'll need to do the following :
XP & Vista use different default workgroup names. So unless you've already changed them, you need to change one or the other to match. Vista uses WORKGROUP as the default, XP uses MSHOME as the default.
First of all, check on the XP machine that the workgroup name is MSHOME (right click on My Computer & select Properties. In system properties, select the Computer Name tab & check the workgroup name is MSHOME.)
Next, on the Vista machine, go to Start menu, then right click on Computer & select Properties. In the System window, change the workgroup name from WORKGROUP to match the xp machine. Reboot the system.

On the Vista machine, click Start, then right click Network & select Properties.
In the Network & Sharing Centre window, check that the network type is set to Private (not public or domain). If it needs changing, use the customize button.

In the Sharing & Discovery section, make sure that the following options are turned on :
Network discovery
File sharing
Public folder sharing
Printer sharing

Hi. Sorry about not getting back to the mail you sent, I fell asleep at my desk... tried to pull an all-nighter to get an essay done. It failed, I think I failed too. Oh well.

Okay then, all three machines are on the same workgroup. In Vista, all of those options are turned on except Printer sharing, because it says "There are no printers attached to this computer to share."

The Vista drivers are installed on the XP desktop that the printer is connected to, yes. And they work too.

It didn't ask me about cartridges this time. I'd rather not put that they're new. I've done that before on a previous laptop and it messes up the status reports. It was telling me I had full ink when I needed to buy new cartridges.

The TCP/IP thing did fail. Should I try LPR now? And I don't get what you mean by plug in the laptop to the Vista machine? :S

Last night (or morning for you?), I thought I was getting somewhere with it. I started the Add Printer Wizard, and selected Use an Existing Port: \\Kitchen\Lexmark. It then asked for a printer driver, so I chose "Have Disk" and pointed it to C:\drivers\printer\X1100\drivers\Win_XP2K which is where the download from the Lexmark website extracted itself to. It found the "Lexmark X1110 Series" digitally signed driver. I clicked Next, and it asks for a printer name and whether it should be set as default. Clicked Next again and it started installing. A Lexmark Software License Agreement dialogue came up, I accepted. A few moments later a UAC prompt appeared too. And then it finished. But it didn't work. :whistling:

Okay, I turned on my laptop this morning and picked up my emails. I ended up here. After typing that last post I checked the Printers folder. There's something in there "Lexmark X1100 Series on KITCHEN".

Weird, I thought. I didn't put it there. Anyway, I opened the properties and everything's greyed out. They're all the same as the options on the Desktop PC that it's connected to, even the port settings is set to USB001 | Virtual Print Port for Lexmark | Lexmark X1100 Series.

When I hit "Print Test Page", it actually printed a test page!!!!!!!!!!

The page that prints is titled "Windows Printer Test Page", not "Windows XP Printer Test Page" as the one the desktop prints out look like. However, the first line is "If you can read this information, you have successfully installed your Lexmark X1100 Series on KITCHEN".

My laptop's called M-Laptop (don't worry, I do have an imagination-- it used to be called Dylan) so something's not right there. But, it worked!

I've yet to try actual documents yet. And I don't know how long the printer'll stay in the printers folder for yet. I'll try a document now...

I really don't know how it magically started working. Very confusing.

Thank You! For all the help, thanks. Seriously. I would donate blood for you, but I really hate needles. And I think you have to be 18? Or is it 16? I'm inbetween the two. Anyway, either way... I won't be able to donate blood without fainting.

Once again, thanks ever such a lot. I can finally print that essay I was working on before.

hehe WOOHOOO!

my general rule of thumb is not to question why or how you got the printer to work...but just to accept the fact that you did...i can't stand printers

No, nor me... crafty little devils.

I'm glad it worked anyway, I got an A on that essay which would've been a U otherwise. ("What is this thing 'handwrite' I hear you speak of?" is the general response people get when they ask me why I didn't just handwrite it.)

So, yeah... thanks for the A. :whistling:
