When I try to install spybot search and destroy, it looks like it installs correctly, but when I run it, the .exe file can't be found.
Any thoughts?

Tks

Hi, wizinoz.

What version of Spybot S&D have you installed?

Are you trying to use an old shortcut, perhaps from an older version?

Can you browse to the Spybot's folder under Program Files and find the .exe file?

If so, what happens if you try to double-click the .exe file from there?

If the program runs, create a new shortcut.

Please post the results.

Hi, LG-thanks for the reply.
I'm trying to install Spybot S&D ver. 1.4 No, not using the old shortcut. And I did use Explorer to look in the folder where it installed-there is NO .exe file ! Its like something is preventing the .exe file from being created. I turned off SpySweeper, don't have anything running that should do this. I downloaded a new copy of Spybot'as installer, thinking maybe the old one was corrupted, but same thing-no .exe file after installation.

I apologize for the delay in replying to you.

I downloaded Spybot S&D 1.4 from their website, using Planet Mirror. The download and install went flawlessly. The program started as I expected it to and ran without problems.

This is what I want you to do:

1. Uninstall Spybot, reboot, delete the Spybot folder from under Program Files
2. Disable completely your Antiviris software
3. Download the file using a different mirror
4. Install

Did that make any difference?

If not, are you running any other antispyware software that might interfere with Spybot?

OK, I did the following:

(1. Uninstall Spybot, reboot, delete the Spybot folder from under Program Files
2. Disable completely your Antiviris software
3. Download the file using a different mirror
4. Install

No change, still doesn't create an executable. I am running Spysweeper, but I turned it off before trying to install Spybot. And now something new has gotten to me: while I'm not doing anything, but the PC is up, all of a sudden something accesses the Internet and I get about 10 popups...things flashing and zig-zagging around. Each is in its own window, and I can close all of them, but about 15 minutes later, Internet Explorer tasks appear on the task bar, one after another, and I have a bunch of popups again.
I'm ready to format my hard drive and re-install XP, but its time-consuming to re-install my applications. Many hours. Plus customizing everything.
What a pain!!

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance

Well, wizinoz, that doesn't sound good. But before you reload your computer, you could visit the Malware forum for a clean-up.

Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty (and you may not be) then post a hijackthis log in THE MALWARE FORUM forum. (Posting HiJack This logs in any other forum other than the malware forum is forbidden. If you post an HJT log in any other forum, it will be removed and it will take you longer to get help, so please make sure you only post HJT logs in the malware forum)
