trying to wipe out c drive and start over. have original xp disc and keep getting error that says cant recognize drive C.

Is the hard drive PATA or SATA? Check the Bios to see if the drive is recognized. If it isn't see if it is set to automatically recognize the hard drive. Also check the Cmos battery on the motherboard to see if it is weak or dead. If it is still not recognized check the IDE to see if it is loose or bad. If that fails test the hard drive with the manufacturers tools.
