Could be software. Does control+alt+del bring up the task manager? If so, take a look at what program is stalling and/or what process is using a lot of CPU time.

Lately I've seen a few computers where Norton AV was using 99% of CPU time, stalling the computer. The solution was to uninstall Norton (required the use of a removal utility from norton.com) and install a free virus checker - AVG, Avira, Avast, etc.
