Problems are being caused by
- msdirectx.sys
- sounddrv.exe
- dc38.sys
which keep showing up. I've been told by various progams that trojan.rootkit.h is the culprit at last for the msdirectx.sys file.

The havoc they're wreaking would be:
- msconfig. taskmanager, and regedit don't open unless I change their name or extension
- I cannot use the MS Installer at all, which means I cannot install programs

Here is my latest Hijackthis file:

Thanks for asking -- no, I got that cleaned out.

But now I'm fighting 2 possible remnants of the same virus. Have you heard of these 2 conditions and if so, how to get rid of them:

1. In Outlook, I click SEND/RECIEVE and it tells me I don't have permission to do that. Well, of course I do - I'm the admin!
2. I cannot install anything that relies on the ikernel.exe engine of Installshield 6x. I have tried to take it out, reinstall it, etc, but it always collapses on me, saying an error of "access is denied" is occurring.

I'm so frustrated I"m about to reformat my hard drive.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

DAvid

You are very kind to post these instructions and I'll follow them to the letter and then report back. Question though: The WeatherBug program is something I"ve had for some time without any problems. It connects to the weather.com channel and updates weather in a graphic format on my desktop. Have you heard of problems with it, or just never heard of it before? The term "bug" means the icon is like a ladybug - not that it's a virus.

I'll go thru and do this stuff without getting rid of WeatherBug unless you're absolutely sure that I should dump it.

Thanks,

David

I have now performed all the suggestions you made, save for the removal of WeatherBug which I am frmly convinced is not a problem. (It's the Premium Service that contains no adware).

Results:
- Ad-Aware shows 0 objects that are questionable.
- Hijackthis is below.
- I found no files on my hard drive at all that were ybarw*.*

I also did a "find" in regedit. There WERE several references to YBARW: I was unable to delete a few and was able to delete a few.
The ones I could NOT delete were contained in local machine\system\controlsetxx\enum\root\legacy ybarw. The XX stands for control set, control set 001, and control set 003. Deletion was not allowed since a program was using it. Weird.
The ones that COULD be deleted were in control set 001\services\ybarw and controlset 003. The plain controlset with no # didn't have it.
Finally, I also found a reference to YBARW here: current user\software\microsoft\search assistant\acmru\5603\ folder. At the time I was running a search for those parameters so maybe that was all it is.

By the way, I noticed YPCSERVICE in the original Hijack log and you didn't mention it. Something OK?

Then I went back into Normal mode and tried all my problems and they still existed: 1] Outlook doesn't let me do send/receive, saying it's denying me access 2] Cannot use any install or uninstall that relies on ikernel

And to top it all off, when I power off my laptop and then restart it, sometimes it won't start. Tonite it took 7 tries to get it to power up and of course I then went into Safe Mode and did your tests. I called Compaq and their recorded message indicated that a computer that won't restart may be being hit by a virus.

What are your thoughts on that?

Hijack this right here. ANd thanks again !! :tazz:

Turn off system restore and set new restore points.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Do you use Messenger Plus 3? Some versions are OK and some are bundled with items you don't want. Check these in Hijack This if you don't use it or want it.

O4 - Global Startup: eFax Live Menu 3.2.lnk = C:\Program Files\eFax Messenger Plus 3.2\J2GDllCmd.exe
O4 - Global Startup: eFax Tray Menu 3.2.lnk = C:\Program Files\eFax Messenger Plus 3.2\J2GTray.exe

Do you work from home via a vpn etc.? You have a lot of items going on in your log.

I would also recommend using ccleaner

I have done the restore points thing several times and nothing helps.

I do not use Messenger 3.

I do have a corporate VPN but have had that in a separate log-on profile for 6 months without any problems at all.

I have used ccleaner for over a week, at least daily & inbetween trying various things. Never helps.

Thanks anyway,

David

I would try upgrading to SP2 after getting rid of Messenger Plus 3. I don't see any malware on your system.

The only other thing you can try is the VX2 Adaware.

If that doesn't work, I will move you over to the xp forum, where those guys deal with xp operating systems.

Download the free VX2 Cleaner here[list]
[*]Close Ad-Aware SE build 1.05 and Ad-Watch (if running)
[*]Install the VX2 Cleaner
[*]Start Ad-Aware SE build 1.05
[*]Go to “Plug-ins”
[*]Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click “Run Plugin”
[*]If your computer isn't infected, click "close"
[*]If your computer is infected:[list]
[*]Select “Clean System”
[*]Reboot your computer
[*]Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
[*]Remove any VX2 objects detected
[*]Reboot your computer again
[*]Run a second scan to make sure the files have been removed from your computer

Thanks for all your help. It's very much appreciated even though it's not doing anything.

I have an aversion to putting SP2 on my system since I feel it'll just compound the problems I'm having - it has separate problems of its own. I do however regularly do updates to SP1.

The VX2 did nothing; the system showed up as clean.

Thanks,

David

I'm moving you over to the xp/2000 forum. Maybe they can find a solution to your problem. Please reply to this post and state your problem again, so they don't have to wade through all the fixes we tried.

Good luck. :tazz:
