We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Did you try updating windows. Go to windows update and download available updates, excluding SP2. Is it a valid version of Windows?

Platform: Windows XP

This is off of the top of your Hijack This log. It is showing that you don't have SP1 or SP2. Have you visited the Windows Update site?

I see...what a weird deal. When I click on the "sp1s install" on the microsoft site, it directs me to the auto updates page to look for what needs to be installed. how can I get to sp1a directly?

Some computers have windows update on an icon when you click start. If you dont have that, go here:

windows update

Let it run and find what updates you need. It will show you what you need. Click on the items you want to install. Install everything, except SP2.

when I do that, it only comes back with one hotfix...nothing about sp1, 2, etc. Why would it be saying that? I do have some hotfixes in my control panel...should I remove those first and then try?

No, don't delete the hot fixes. Is it a valid version of Windows?
