Hi tangela and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

You are missing the top half of the HijackThis log. The half that contains the version number and the type of operating system you use. You also need to install HJT as directed below.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Download the most current version of Hijackthis (v.1.99.1)to a folder of its own. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Please go to your 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' and name the folder 'HijackThis'.

B. Download Hijackthis from:HERE

C. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

D. Close ALL windows except HJT

E. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

F. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi tangela,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1) Finally, I need you to place HijackThis into its own folder, .
HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

So just right click on your desktop.
Choose NEW>>Folder and name the folder HJT.
Drag your current HJT icon into the folder and it is done.

2) Second, I need you to disable TeaTimer for now, as it can interfere with the fixing of problems.

Open Spybot and and make sure you are in Advanced mode (check it in the 'Mode' menu). Go to the Tools section and click resident and then uncheck the box for Tea Timer.

Then, reboot

3. Now let's do some work on your log:

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
. Click the Config button located in the lower right hand corner of the HijackThis window.
. When the new screen opens, find and click the Miscellaneous Tools button.
. Then choose the Open Process Manager button.
. From the list of processes, hilight the following items by clicking them, ONE AT A TIME, then DELETE them by clicking the KILL button:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Once all items have been KILLED, click the Back button which will return you to the HijackThis main window. Now place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Yahoo Instant Messengar] YahooMsgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Yahoo Instant Messengar] YahooMsgr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HijackThis startup scan] C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\HijackThis.exe /startupscan
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {E0CE16CB-741C-4B24-8D04-A817856E07F4} -

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How To Start To Safe Mode In Windows 2000

*Turn the computer on
*When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key.
*The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu will appear.
*Choose the Safe mode option. (it is usually the first item in the list).
*Use the arrow keys to select it if it is not selected by default.
*Press Enter. The computer will start in Safe mode.
*when finished troubleshooting, close all programs
*restart the computer as you normally would

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if they are present):

FILES

C:\YahooMsgr.exe (This is not the real one)

FOLDERS (with all their content)

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally,RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi tangela,

There is cumpulsive behavior and then there is practicality.

Yes you have to perform the operations prescribed to clear up the account that I am working on with you.

Yes there could very easily be numerous user accounts on that machine depending on how it was set up. One is usually be an "administrator account" the others would be users. Now if every member of your family logs in under a different name you could have that many accounts to deal with.

Now think about the frustration of trying to fit all of this into your busy work day. There comes a time when a professional rehab is in order.

I would try to finish this account and see how the machine runs. If there is junk going on or if this one can't be fixed without fixing them all you may want to consider having your disc formatted by a pro. If you do this, make sure that all your important data is backup up so you don'y loose anything important.

In conclusion, I would try and fix this one and then play it by ear. Please keep me informed of your decision.

Regards,

Hi tangela,

Your log is looking a lot better. Just a couple of adjustments and a last check.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

Open HijackThis, click on the SCAN button

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HijackThis startup scan] C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\HijackThis.exe /startupscan
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {E0CE16CB-741C-4B24-8D04-A817856E07F4} -

After all items have been checked, click on Fixed Checked and exit the program

REBOOT your system

Finally,RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Wheni just tried to send this reply, it came back with (CANNOT DISLAY PAGE< ETC>) i will tryi again- yesterday i lost my entire msg. i typed out and never got it back

sorry about sending to pm, but sometimes when i send to this and I push the button to send it out, my computer answers back with" CANNOT display, etc"
ok, completed your last instructions- i went thru my user names and admin. names(yes, i have 2 admin., one called "MAIN" and the other some other name) and had HJT look for the files you wanted deleted-i think i did it but now do i have to go thru ALL the different USER/ADMIN. LOGS and do the big cleanup where i go to safe mode, etc. and do the kill button? for the logs other than the one in your instruct., i only did the delete as result of the HJT log - do you want to copy of all final logs? they all over different user names/admin. names...thanks so much

Hi tangela,

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and
C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

6. You may find that you have to repeat the steps a couple of times.

7.Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH- as you can see i have been trying to send you all my various user/admin. log files because i am still confused as to whether or not every log file is clean if in fact ONE of them is clean-or you know what i mean? do u need to see all the log files? should i delete all my user names and start over? MOST IMPORTANTLY::
do i follow your instructions from a few minutes ago AND DO THE SAME PROCESS FOR EACH USER NAME, LOGING IN and logging out of each name each time??
