disk defragmenter freezes almost immediately upon starting. i hit ctrl, alt. delete. a blue screen appears

the system is either busy or has become unstable. you can wait and see if it becomes available again, or you can restart my computer.

*Press any key to return to windows and wait.
*Press ctrl alt del again to restart your computer. you will lose unsaved information in any programs that are running.

press any key to continue

When i hit ctrl alt del again, nothing happens. when i hit any key it goes to black, though cursor is visible, and nothing. how long should i wait?

what's up?

Use Safe Mode, disable any virus scanners, firewalls or other large applications running in the background and don't run any programs.
