I have a thousand page document with lots of surnames in it. I need to make an index for it. Any recommendations on what software might do that?

what format is this document? Microsoft word, for example?

It is a .doc document written on Microsoft Word 2002.

there isn't any specific piece of software that will automate this process. There are services you can pay to create an index for you, such as TechScribe.
