I've come home for the weekend and decided to clean up the computer a bit. I was browsing through my documents and noticed quite a few files ending in .dl_ and .hl_

I have no ideas as to what they may be. An example of one of the names is "nvwcpja.hl_"

I'm just wondering if I should delete these or if they may be part of an essential program.

Thanks for your help!

Filename extensions ending with an underscore are installation files, the underscore is changed to the correct extesion when they are installed, e.g. dl_ becomes dll. It appears to be part of your nvidia video card installation.
