Ok really stupid question... can i mix a 108M wireless device wit a 54M usb dongle? what is the difference? speed? does this matter? thanks

Yes. No difference. Speed is irrelevant. No it doesn't matter.

You can use a 108Mbps router with a 54Mbps dongle. The only difference is it will not connect at 108Mbps. Until broadband speeds get anywhere near 54Mbps, its not worth worrying about, just know that it will work.
