Have run virus scan (I have Avast on my system), adaware, spyware doctor and ccleaner - all with system restore disabled, but the virus Win32:Trojan-gen.{UPX!} persists whenever I connect to the internet (I'm using a dial-up conection). I've rebooted and run hijack this, and the logfile is attached below. Grateful for your help and advice. (I realise it's 1 April, but this is no joke!)

Hello djw49

Welcome to G2Go. :whistling:
My name is Kahdah and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.
As I am still in training I will be helping you under supervision of our expert teachers,so there may be a delay between posts.

I will be back with you as soon as possible.

In the meantime you are running Hijackthis from your Desktop.
I will need you to move it to permanent directory.

To do this:
Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore")
Navigate to this location >C:\Program Files Right click on an empty space and choose "New">"New Folder".
Name that folder Hijackthis.
Go then to your desktop icon of Hijackthis.exe and Right click on the icon and click "Cut".

Go then back to this location >C:\Program Files\Hijackthis open that folder and then right click and paste Hijackthis.exe inside of that folder.
After that please also rename Hijackthis.exe to Fixit.exe.
You can rename it by Right clicking on Hijackthis.exe and choose "rename".

After doing that I will need you to create an uninstall list using Hijackthis.
To do this:
Open HijackThis
*click Config
*click Misc Tools
*Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
*Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
*Click Save

After doing all of that please post back with the newly renamed Fixit.exe and the Uninstall list logs.

Many thanks for your assistance. It's probably going to be a learning experience for both of us.

Hello djw49

Many thanks for your assistance
It's probably going to be a learning experience for both of us.

You are welcome.
It is Always a learning experience for me. :whistling:

You did good but you renamed the folder instead of the file.
I will have to have you rename the file to show the rest of what is hiding from Hijackthis.

To do this:
Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore")
Navigate to this location >>C:\Program Files\Fixit.exe Right click on Fixit.exe and rename it Hijackthis.
Then go to the file name Hijackthis.exe and rename it Fixit.exe.
That should get you squared away.

After that please download haxfix.exe
and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
E. Exit Haxfix
  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt > (c:\haxfix.txt)
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.

After running Haxfix please download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
After doing those things and renaming the Hijackthis to Fixit.exe post back with these logs:
Fixit.exe log
Haxfix log
Dr.Web cure it log

Hello djw49
Good job.:whistling:
  • Open this folder program files > haxfix and double click on fix.bat (or double click on fix.bat desktop icon)
  • Close all other open windows since this step requires a reboot
  • Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.
  • Close all open windows except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter
  • The computer will reboot
  • After reboot a logfile will open > (c:\haxfix.txt)
  • Post the contents of that logfile along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

After that please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

After that please download OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    c:\windows\system32\e1.dll
    C:\cp1041.nls

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Reboot a final time and post back with these logs:
c:\haxfix.txt
C:\Vundofix.txt
OTMoveIt log
New Hijackthis (Fixit) log.

Hi Kahdah - one more thing: My PC is infected, so I'm sending these posts from my laptop because when I connect the PC to the network I immediately get a warning message from Avast saying that C:\windows\system32 is infected with totour.exe. It's just given me that message again when I opened the network connection to the PC.

Hello djw49

one more thing: My PC is infected, so I'm sending these posts from my laptop because when I connect the PC to the network I immediately get a warning message from Avast saying that C:\windows\system32 is infected with totour.exe.
It's just given me that message again when I opened the network connection to the PC.
Yes that is fine we will take care of that in a minute.
It is best not to connect your pc to your network as it is possible to transfer infections to your other computers on your network.

I srongly advise to print out these instructions.

Please download Process Explorer from here
Save it to your desktop.

After that download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".<<<***VERY IMPORTANT***
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

After that please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

After that open up Notepad and copy all of the items in the code box below.
Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as Vundo.reg on your Desktop.(We will use it later)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"2chkdsk"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\__c006DC8A ]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=""

After that please re-open Hijackthis and hit scan only.
Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2chkdsk] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\System32\__c005BBDC.dat",setvm
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://imgfarm.com/i...etup1.0.0.8.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: "", e1.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c006DC8A - C:\WINDOWS\System32\__c006DC8A.dat

Now close Hjt.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
[*]Restart your computer
[*]After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
[*]Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
[*]Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
[*]Choose your usual account.

Next, unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe.

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of __c006DC8A.dat once and then click the kill button.
After you have killed all of the __c006DC8A.dat under winlogon click ok.

Next double click on explorer.exe, click on the Threads tab at the top and again click once on each instance of __c006DC8A.dat (if present) then click the kill button.
Once you have done that click ok again.

After that please scroll down until you see this file:
2chkdsk
double click on it and click on the Threads tab at the top and click the Kill button.
Once you have done that click ok again.

After that please click on Find at the top of process explorer then please type in __c006DC8A.dat and hit search,
double click on each of these and click on the Threads tab at the top and
hit the kill button.Once you have done that click ok again.

After that double click on the Vundo.reg file I had you create earlier (it is on your desktop)
Click yes to allow it to merge with the registry.
============================================
After that I see that you have LimeWire installed.
Having P2p programs such as these raise the possibility of getting infected again.
See here for information on P2P's.
I will leave it up to you if you want to remove it.

If you choose to remove Limewire then please click on Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove programs.
Uninstall Limewire.

Then using Windows Explorer (to get there right click on Start then click Explore)
Navigate to this location and delete this folder.
C:\Program Files\Limewire

After that please double click on OTMoveit.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\__c005BBDC.dat
    C:\windows\system32\totour.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose No.

After that double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu

After all of that Run AVG-Anti-Spyware:

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.
Please reboot and post back with these logs:
New Hijackthis(fixit.exe)
Ot move it log
AVG anti-spyware log

Please let me know how it goes or if you had any problems.:whistling:

Hi kahdah,

This mostly worked, except for the following:

Hjt fixed the 4 files, but flashed a warning message that it saved to a notefile; I've tried to locate this, but failed.
As soon as I had installed and updated AVG, it detected the c006DC8A.dat files and asked me to quarantine them.
Consequently, when I ran Process Explorer, it didn't detect any c006DC8A.dat files in the threads
The file 2chkdsk also wasn't present
OTMoveit couldn't find the file C:\windows\system32\totour.exe, (which is a little worrying as that's the one that Avast kept identifying as containing the virus Win32:Trojan-gen.{UPX!}).

My laptop and PC aren't networked; it's just that when I enable the LAN connection on the PC it detects the virus. It was starting to crash 3-4 times a day, and when I connected it to my email server it would attempt to send dozens on spam-type emails (which Avast prevented). I've just tried enabling the LAN connection to see if everything's OK, and I'm sorry to say that Avast again detected C:\windows\system32\totour.exe, as still containing the virus Win32:Trojan-gen.{UPX!} (which was sent to the quarantine chest). Anyway, log files attached below. Sorry this is taking so long to fix

Hello djw49

We have made some progress. :whistling:

Please re-open Hijackthis and hit scan only.
Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c006DC8A - C:\WINDOWS\System32\__c006DC8A.dat (file missing)

Now close Hjt.

Please download WinsockFixXP
to your desktop.
Double click on the Winsock icon and hit fix.
You will be prompted to reboot please reboot.

After that please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Please post back with these logs:
New Hijackthis
and the kaspersky log.

Glad we're making progress. :whistling:

This last set went smoothly, although Kapersky didn't find any infection, at least not in the unlocked files. One question - should I have system restore activated or not when I do all this? It's presently active. Thanks again for your help.

Hello djw49
We will turn off your system restore after we can confirm that you are clean.

Can you confirm that you are no longer receiving the popup from Avast about tutor.exe?

Just to double check let's try one more thing.
Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

After that please post back with these logs:
Silent Runners log
New Hijackthis log.

Hi kahdah,

I'm sorry to say that after I enable the LAN and connect the PC to the network the Avast popup still appears, saying that totour is infected with Win32:Trojan-gen.{UPX!}. I follow Avast's advice to move it to the virus chest. Also, in the last 2 days the system has started running very slowly. I've uninstalled Limewire as you suggested, and have also uninstalled BKAV anti-virus - following the site's advice to only have one antivirus prog, and uninstalled Gozilla - as that seemed to provide the original source of infection. I'm still running HijackThis by going into Program Files; is that correct?

I've now run Silent Runners, logfile below:

Hello djw49

You can just click the icon on your desktop for Hijackthis.

I am not seeing anything in these logs so we will take a deeper look.

Copy everything inside the quote box below (starting with dir) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as findfile.bat on your Desktop.

dir "C:\windows\system32\totour.exe" /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate findfile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the contents of that Notepad here along with a new HiJackThis log in your next reply.

* Click here to download AVG Anti Rootkit and save it to your desktop.
