Hello everyone

I am using Microsoft Windows XP.
In the lower right corner, I get a yellow shield saying that updates for my system are available.
The only update available is the Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1

After downloading, I can start the installation process. After a few seconds, it just says "Installation failed".

After that, I am again asked to download the Installer, which again fails to install afterwards and so on. I am not able to install the Adobe Flash Player without the Windows Installer, for example.

Try downloading then installing Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2). You seem to be behind on updates.

Okay, I have downloaded the package.
When I try to install it, it hangs with the error message:

English Translation (have a german XP Version):
"KB893804v2 Setup could not save the registry key
HKCR\IMsiServer
in the file c:\windows\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893804v2$\reg00015
5: Access denied"

I can select Abort, Retry, Ignore

What should I do?

For the original Error Message see the attachement.

Did you try disabling your anti-virus program or any anti-malware program which blocks registry changes before attempting the install? Some programs such as SpyBot's TeaTimer, Spyware Guard, Prcocess Guard or etc. could stop the install.

The only product I am using is Panda Antivirus

I disabled it and retried the installation. But nothing changes.

I have never had a problem with Panda enabled and updates so that can be ruled out. Look in Add or Remove Programs for Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 and remove it. The previous corrupted install may be interferring with the newer download. Also check Services to see if Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is set to Manual and Automatic Updates is set to Automatic.

The Windows Installer does not show up in the add/remove tab.
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service is already set to automatic and the service is running.

Hi,

go to the location: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\IMsiServer

Right-click on IMsiServer -> Permissions
Click on Add -> Enter the exact name of the local user account name in which you are logged in and click on Check names.
Highlight the username and make sure there are check marks under Allow for Full Control and Read.

Once you have done all these steps, try installing the Windows Installer 3.1

Let us know the results...

If your getting an access denied error, that means that your dont have permissions. And since you need to install WI 3.1, that means you have 0 updates past SP2. Make sure your on an admin account, if you are and it still doesnt work create a new admin account and try it using that one.
