I had an external maxtorUSB hard drive hooked up to a computer system I built. I unplugged the USB cable when the computer was on and when I plugged it back in it's recognized the drive but windows says it needs to be formatted. It was a drive I used simply to back up my files and nothing else. I ran chkdsk in msdos and it says volume F has no label - the drive letter under windows is "d". Not sure what any of this means but any help would be appreciated. I am basically looking to recover my files.

Have you tried plugging the hard drive into a different computer system? If so, did it work?
