256MB of RAM is fine for running XP, I did it myself for a few years. I even ran FarCry on a machine with only 256MB RAM.

Out of curiosity, what programs can you not run?

It's a program that does imposistions. Will only run on 98. Have even recreated the wini file that this relies on.
It is not a program that everyone uses but when I upgraded the computers at work we lost use of it I had to keep 1 computer on 98 if we wanted to use it.
