So I've been reading all kinds of stuff around here about BIOS settings and all that. I saw a few different places where the Quick Boot mode isnt a very good idea and can cause problems.

Now my computer has had absolutely no problems with anything. But I went ahead and entered Setup to disable Quick Boot and to show the diagnostic screen instead of the Dell logo.

After doing so Windows would not load, I powered down and re-booted...but re-entered setup and restored the default settings. My computer booted in Safe Mode but I got the following error message:

"Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll
A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed."

How do I fix this and how do I get my computer out of safe mode?

Need help ASAP, Im in the middle of writing a History paper that is due tonight.

That error has something to do with your video card. That dll is used by nVidia video cards. It could be your video card is starting to die, or when you changed settings in the BIOS, you inadvertantly changed a video setting. Not sure what else to tell you. If you have another video card around, maybe pop that one in.

Also, if you can get hijackthis to that computer somehow, run it and post a log back here. I'm sort of interested to see a certain registry entry.

When you say the computer is running well, does that mean you fixed the problem?

No, I just mean that everything else seems to be functioning correctly - not running slowly etc. Im stuck in 800x600 (should be 1024x768) and 4 bit color.

After several restarts Im still in safe mode and that dll error message comes up.

Hrmmmmmm. Your hijackthis log show's that your not running in safe mode, so I assumed everything was ok. If your running in 4bit, then something is funky with that video card. If you have the software for it, you can try reinstalling it or you could delete it in Device Manager and reboot and hope it reinstalls properly. I'm not sure I would do that though if the card is faulty. Is that computer still under warranty??

Thanks for the help guys. I reinstalled the driver and my display is back to normal.

One new issue though, now I have another error message that pops up.

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\NVMCTRAY
Specified module could not be found."

Im guessing that this has to do with a tray icon that I sometimes get for color management and other such things that have to do with the graphics card.

Any idea how to get rid of this?

I think I learned my lesson, Im not gonna mess with stuff unless it needs fixing. I had no problems before making those two changes to the BIOS. I seriously doubt that I made any other inadvertent changes.

Im working on a hunch with my brothers computer, the subject of the other thread I have here. Could somebody poke their head in there and see if they can help me out?
