My computer seems unusually SLOW.
Well, doesn't just seem to be, it is.

Sometimes it takes 40 secs after I type in
my yahoo ID and password before the email page comes up.
Then another wait when I click on each email.
Same from going to different websites.

I did a search here at Geeks and checked for suggestions.
I did the Spybot, Adaware, Avast test.
The ATF cleaner that was advised on GEEKS is now a desktop Icon.
I did disk clean up and then defragmentation.

It isn't working any faster.

We use PeoplePc at 9.95 per month.
It is suppose to be 'accelerated' speed. I ran a diagnostic test and it says it
is working. I would like to try System Restore but when I set a date,
like March 1, 2007, it won't let me???

It says the 'line' speed is 16.8.
What does that mean and is that why it is slow?
(It used to read 28 or so.)
Any suggestions?

Would broadband solve the problem? ($400.00 for installation and $49.95 per month!)
(We can't get cable in my rural area)

Or do I need a new computer? We purchased it in 2002?

Just to give you an idea: Where I live a common installation will give you a speed of nearly 200 kilobytes per second (that's just over 1.5 megabits per second). His speed is 1.8KB/s while yours is 200KB/s. That means your connection speed is well more then 10 times the amount. About 111 times as fast to be precise.

??? My broadband speed is about 1.8 megabits which is 225 kilobytes. Her's is 16.5 kilobytes. Mine is is over 14 times faster. I am afraid you mixed bits and bytes, megas and kilos.

Yeah, my Internet is S-L-O-W.

I don't think it is faster than anybody's! haha

Off line seems to be working like normal.

Does the line speed make a difference in the time
it takes for pages to load?

Is there anyway it can be improved???

I think I will call peoplepc and do a little complaining!

We are in the country and cannot have DSL or anything like that;
not yet they tell me.

P.S. Edited to add that the line speed is 16.8 Kbps...this morning it was 14.4!

If you get only about 16 kbs (kilobit per second) then you are worse off by a factor of about 110 compared to my connection. That's very slow indeed. Your dialup modem should enable about 56 kbs. Try to call your service provider and check with it.

Your computer seem to have no problems other then that.

By the way, where I live, In a small village in the north-east of Galillee, in Israel, we only got DSL connection about three years ago. So there is hope, I believe, to northern Indiana.

This is what the technician from peoplepc told me to do.

I did it....it did not help a bit.

Computer is still just as S_L_O_W loading websites
or my email account.

If your speeds slowed down that much I would suspect the phone lines. Do you hear any static when you pick up a phone?

Problem: The modem’s download speed is extremely slow.

Solution: Does your connection slow to a crawl? Are you a year older when a page loads? If so, remember that analog modems aren’t the fastest connections around. DSL and cable boast speeds up to 50 times faster, and sometimes more.

After reading about the phone line, (mine isn't crackly)
I thought just maybe trying a different phone number for my hook
up would help. But it didn't. (There are only two local numbers I can use
to connect to peoplepc.)

I am going to take my computer to the computer shop this week
and have it checked out...if they hook it up to their DSL line
and it works great; then I will KNOW it is my Internet provider
or my phone line causing the problem and NOT my computer.

If that is the case, I may go to Broadband even though it is
a lot more expensive.

My husband took my computer to The Computer Shop.
(That is the name of it: "The Computer Shop"!)

Here is how they fixed my SLOW page load.
They put in a new Motem.
They said the Motem had a glitch.
(I assumed a faulty Motem wouldn't work at all.)

It only cost $23.00 for the Motem ($30 labor)

Page load is GREAT now.
It works fine and dandy; quite fast enough considering it is
Dial up and CHEAP. ($9.95 per month...peoplepc.com)

P.S. It was a V92 Modem
