Hello Support,

My Laptop is a Dell Insipron 8600, Intel Pentium 2.0 MHz, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB HD, XP Pro SP2

I had a version of Office 2003 Pro SP1 running fine, then my teen son tried to update the program to SP2,
MS Validation said the version was invalid and blocked the program.
Then he tried to uninstall the program from 'Add/Remove Program' but error message said
"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exist and can be accessed, or contact the vendor to verify that this
is a valid Window Installer Patch package."
Then I tried to install from a CD - MS Office 2003 Pro SP2, which I'm sure is valid (I bought the disc from Best Buy and it ran and installed on my desktop).
However, after the program loaded, it seemed to freeze, then on ejecting the CD I got a message -
"Settings files D:\Office II - Disc 1 - Professional\FILES\SETUP\SETUP.INI is missing or invalid. Please ensure the file exist and is accessible."

1) How can I delete the current version/copy of Office 2003 Pro SP1 from my laptop?
and
2) How do I replace the SETUP.INI file or install my current copy of Office 2003 Pro SP2?

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Once you install it, you can run it from Start, All Programs, Windows Install Clean Up. If Office 2003 shows up in the list, highlight it and click Remove.

Thanks for your speedy reply. I downloaded Win Install Clean Up and it removed Office 2003 Pro SP1 from my laptop.
Then I restarted and tried again to install my current copy of Office 2003 Pro SP, but I got that same message - SETUP.INI is missing or invalid.
What can I do to fix that?

Majageek, the path you mentioned in your original post looks odd. Is your disk an original retail copy of Office?

Please check the back of the disk for signs of wear, scratches, smudges, etc. You can clean the back with a soft cloth.

If you have space on your hard drive, try copying the entire CD to your hard drive and running Setup from there.

Yes it is an original copy - installed it on my desktop and all is well there.
I tried to install it on the laptop when my son messed with the version of Office 2003 Pro that was on my laptop,
that's the first time I got that message -
"Settings files D:\Office II - Disc 1 - Professional\FILES\SETUP\SETUP.INI is missing or invalid. Please ensure the file exist and is accessible."

So I inserted the disc into my desktop drive - to see if it works - and it started to install as it should (I stopped it manually).
So the disc seem to be fine.

I did a search omn microsoft.com and came up with this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308279 which indicates that a customized
setup.ini file can be created to use for Office XP set up.
I don't know if this could work for 2003 Pro, AND I don't uderstand what to do to get it done ... a little too techie for me :-)

Yes, I found that MS article too, but I'm not familiar with doing custom setups. So, I'll have to look at it more closely before I comment.

Since you've managed to uninstall the original version, have you tried again to install off the disk you have?

Yes I have, before and after I started this thread.
And after I checked to see if my disc was okay (see my 12:26pm post).
Each time I get the same message -
"Settings files D:\Office II - Disc 1 - Professional\FILES\SETUP\SETUP.INI is missing or invalid. Please ensure the file exist and is accessible."

Please confirm that your CD ROM drive is not having issues with any other disk. It sounds a little like the drive couldn't read the disk, then when you ejected it, it popped up the missing file error.

The MS article you referenced only applies if you've set up a custom installation or administrative installation point. Does that apply to your situation at home? Did you try copying the CD contents to your hard drive and running Setup.exe from there?

Also, please check the Event Viewer for additional Errors or Warnings that occurred at the same time as the failed install attempt. To get to the Event Viewer, click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Services, Event Viewer. On the left side of the screen are three categories: Application, Security, and System. Check under Application and System for any events that are listed as Warnings or Errors, that also have a date and time that correspond to the error. Once you have an event open, you can click the "copy to clipboard" icon (just below the down arrow) to copy the error text, then you can paste it in a reply to this thread.

I checked my drive, and it is okay ..... I played a music CD, a movie DVD and I loaded a software from an educational program I use. All played/ran without issues.
Installed from the Office 2003 Pro disk - MS Office 2003 Resource Kit without any issues.


Now how do I copy the disk to my hard drive ..... don't know how to, please advise me.

So I ran the Office 2003 Pro disk again (a few minutes ago), tried to install Office 2003 Pro and the same issue/message occurred.

To copy the contents, right click the Start button, then Explore. With the Office disk in the drive, highlight the drive, click the Edit menu, then Select All. This will highligh all items on the disk. Then click the Edit menu again, Copy to Folder, highlight the C:\ drive, click "Make New Folder", give it a name, then click Copy.

However, the errors you provided indicate a problem with the drive or more probably the disk since you're able to read other disks. Did you check the back of the disk for scratches, smudges, or anything else? You can clean the disk with a very soft cloth. If the disk is scratched or in some other way damaged, you can call Microsoft at (800) 360-7561 to get a replacement disk. See Microsoft article 326246 for additional support options.

I checked the disk (again) to make sure it was clean., anyway I cleaned it with a soft dry cloth.
Then I tried to copy to my Laptop HD - exactly as instructed, process started then was stuck at "14mins remaining" at "pup5s.exe" copying.
So I tried copying the disk to my PC HD, and it copied with a glitch.

My thoughts are: the disk is fine but MS Update did something to my computer/system/files to prevent my laptop from install Office Pro 2003 again,
since their system could not validate the copy I had on the laptop in the first place (before my son their to update it).

I will call MS Support for their help.

No, I've never seen updates do anything like that. What would happen if your software isn't genuine is you'd have trouble Activating it, not installing it.

Freezing and hanging during the install indicates a damaged/scratched disk.
