Just installed an ethernet card and got DSL for this computer. Now I can't load either browser, not IE, not Firefox. Gateway said to ask Earthlink if the card is talking to server. Earthlink said it is and to call Gateway again to check my Internet settings. We pinged the system and that worked out.

With IE I get the "there was an error and we have to close" message. Then I can't even X out of IE.....with Firefox, it tells me it can't find my home page, and leaves a blank white screen. In any event, neither browser will load and no Internet.

HELP! :tazz:

start > run
winipcfg

You're getting an Ip address, but are you getting DNS info? (for NIC)

For IE, nothing else in the error message, just a hard lock?

not sure. i think that is what gateway wanted me to check with Earthlink about. but earthlink said according to the lights on the modem, it was.

IE is a hard lock, wants to send the error report but can't, because no internet connection. Also have Weather bug on this machine, and it won't load, get an error. seems all to be because of no connection to the internet.

thanks. I did this with the Gateway folks and he said I need to go back to Earthlink and ask if card is talking to server. Earthlink folks insist that it is talking to server but not the internet. when I click on IE the error comes up about "has to close because of an error" and with Firefox, it says can't find home page and can't find any page that I type in.....could it be when I installed the ethernet card, I then have to tell the computer somehow to use this connection, even though it is an always on connection?

I want you to TELL ME WHAT YOU SEE IN WINIPCFG

I KNOW YOU ALREADY DID IT

I WANT TO SEE WHAT THE DNS INFO IS (and everything else)

well, the computer is my parents computer. So I will have to run winipcfg on their system and capture what it says and post. Probably on Saturday. thanks for your help here......will capture and post from my home machine. This is difficult obviously because that computer is there and my internet connection is here.....

Yes, I'm sure it is...think of how difficult it is for us when we're not even in the same room :tazz:

Here is what I am after...I think that while your computer is "connected" to the internet...ie, they can see your system because it received a valid IP address, your computer is not getting DNS info, which renders your browser useless.

Your browser uses DNS info to translate www.msn.com (a url) to an IP address.

Your computer has no clue what www.msn.com means, so it talks to a DNS server, which then says, ahhhh, you want to go here.....xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Using the ip address, your computer requests the appropriate web page.

What you described fits this scenario

would you be able to give me some examples of what winipcfg might say and some possible resolutions to this? Also, have any idea why this would happen when all I did was insert an ethernet card and then hook into DSL?

Posted Imagesomething like the above

You said they have earthlink?

Did you, or someone, happen to run hijack.

Some ISPs use a script to set the DNS server, and hijack shows this.

Some ISPs have you set it. And some send it via dhcp...

WOuld need to know what you have and how it works.
