Hi, again, i hasn't been long and I have a new problem :whistling: , I restarted my comp and now it says I cannot start x server (graphical interface) I followed a guide on the internet on how to fix this but no luck. The code redhat-config-xfree86 doesn't work, as well I'm not sure what they mean by logging in as root.

heres a link on where I got this from:

Thanks

OK so as you said I removed it and reinstalled it and now it works fine and I get the desktop effects.
Although I still need you're help,

1) how do I change the wallpaper on top and bottom of the cube?,
2) how do I zoom out a little so that I can see the cube better?
3) what is a superkey and how do I use it/change it?
Thank you so much for your help so far.

Soorena

all the settings can be find in beryl settings
Run in terminal
$beryl-settings

Also, with regards to your x server problem, it might be because beryl updated itself, however I am not so sure. The code you have is for a redhat linux distro and not sure how it would work on ubuntu?

What beryl version are you using?
$ beryl -version

Are you still running ubuntu edgy (6.10)?

Thank you for replying, Yes I am still o 6.10, also the version of beryl is the most updated one the site. I cannot tell you what version it is because there is no graphical interface and it looks something like MS-DOS. How can I fix this if possible at all.

Thanks,
Soorena

Oh I remember during the installation of the NVIDIA drivers it asked wether or not I want it to update my X something and it said that the old one will be backed up. How do I reverse it to what it was before? Or downgrade it maybe?

Thanks

this X server problem is usually a result of updating the kernel... have you installed any updates for ubuntu since installing the NVIDIA drivers? If the kernel was updated in one of these updates, you will need to reinstall the NVIDIA drivers. It's a pain, and one of the worst things (IMO) about Linux. You should follow the same steps you did to install the NVIDIA driver in the first place. (you will need to do this from a console session. "the thing that looks like MS-DOS". It can be accessed by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2)

If you forgot how to install the NVIDIA driver, here's an awesome guide:

Awesome NVIDIA driver Guide!

And for your Beryl questions:

1. See here
2. See here
3. The Super key is the "Windows key" on your keyboard. (The one in between Left Ctrl and Left Alt.) It is usually called the Super key in Linux, for obvious copyright reasons.

try executing this line first, then following the "Method 1" (online preferably if you have online access, if not offline will work fine) directions on the link I gave you.

dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

time to learn a new trick then. :whistling:

anytime ubuntu tells you that you need to run something as root, just add a sudo before it, then it will ask you for your password (unless it had already done so recently) and you just type it in. (the password will not show up as you type it, not even asterisks (*), so don't worry about that)

for example, in this case you would type:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I don't know if these steps work properly,

sudo nvidia-xconfig --no-composite

says invalid command line

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/NVIDIA-Settings.desktop

says cannot open display

basicly after that I can't do any other steps.

did this line work?

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx

If so, then

sudo nvidia-xconfig --no-composite

should have worked.

As for

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/NVIDIA-Settings.desktop

Gedit = Graphical editor

Since we don't have a GUI, we can't use Gedit. Replace any "gedit" with "nano".

Ctrl+X to exit... it will then ask "do you want to save?" hit Y. Then hit enter (to save the file to the location you told nano to open in the first place).

Edit: Alternatively, just hitting Ctrl+O should do the trick too. :whistling: Don't know why I didn't tell you that in the first place.

One thing i noticed was that I actually read the thing and it says that the NVIDIA Kernel is version 1.0-7184 but the X module has the version 1.0-9631. Why isn't it automatically changed?
