Welcome karrington
We chatted in live chat, but I'm going to recap here. Start by clearing your BIOS/CMOS. Sometimes power spikes, or brownouts will cause the BIOS to become corrupted, possibly causing it not to recognize your hardware.
Disconnect the power, remove the computer case, look for a battery on the motherboard (like shown below). Remove this battery for at least five minutes. Then replace the battery, and reconnect the power. Reboot and see if it worked. You'll need to reset the system time and date.

Have you recently installed any CD burning programs? You could try this registry patch:

No new programs have been added. when the pc was rebooted it recognised the drived for a few seconds then lost them. subsequent reboot does not recognise them at all/
Power etc to drives still ok
Thanks

PS!
i am looking at the system information (accesories/system info/software environment) and see that the cdrom and cdronFilter driver are shown as 'No' under the 'started' column. The monitor & other drivers are shown as 'yes'. Does this help? I havent a clue how to start them!

Try uninstalling them from the device manager, restart and let the hardware wizard reinstall.

Sorry! cany uninstall as they are not shown on the system! Under safe mode the system changes log shows on 19th that the drives 'diasppeared from the system without first having been prepared for uninstalation'

Many times a virus can be responsible for this. Try a free online virus scan here:
