Laptop Screen Gone Black?

My sister was using her laptop yesterday and it was, not too long ago she turned it on and the screen was black, it made all the noises that a windows xp does like the welcome message and we could just make out the desktop etc.
What is wrong with it?
We have nooo idea,
help would be very muchly appreciated.

It seems to be a screen problem that needs to be fixed by an authorized lab.

This is what I found on another forum:

It sounds like your backlight is no longer working. Possible causes are ...

1) The fluorescent lamp (or lamps) for the backlight has failed or is cracked.

2) The high voltage DC-AC inverter circuit used to drive the fluorescent lamp(s) has failed.

3) The wiring feeding DC power to the inverter or between the inverter and the fluorescent lamp(s) has become disconnected.

FIxing any of these problems is not a do-it-yourself project unless you are very comfortable with taking apart the insides of your laptop and putting it back together correctly.
