In my case there are bad sectors on the Master Boot Record of the hard drive. I am new to the site so I do not know if there are any programs that scan and/or bad sectors. Spin rite I believed is what I used then popped the drive in another computer as a slave and ran checkdisk on it after a failed boot. No checkdisk did not fix it the first time. It works fine now, however I am working on replacing that drive as I do not want to go through that yet again.
