Here's the rundown:

I uninstalled five or six games I no longer played. When I rebooted, system would not boot. Said that hal.dll was corrupt.

Ran a chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, and then used the CD to repair my OS (XP MCE 2005 on a Dell Dimension C521)

Then ran a registry scan and repair, and a registry defrag (TuneUp Utilities) and the system seemed almost normal.

But then I noticed that every few minutes explorer.exe would crash out, sometimes just restarting, sometimes giving me an error dialog with the option of debug/close, (my MDM service is disabled so debug just locks it up, and then I have to use my Process Explorer to close and restart Explorer) and then restarting.

So I then did an sfc /scannow, and it replaced a few files... ran windows update... no change.

I checked the event log, and here's what it says about the crash:

Event Type: Error

I have since run scans with my Kaspersky Internet Security, and my Spyware Doctor (both fully updated) and found nothing but a couple small java trojans that I removed. I then ran CleanUp! and had it remove all the temp stuff just as a last ditch, and to no avail... I still get the crashes repeatedly. I'm getting good enough now to work around them for the most part but if I have to go more than one or two clicks down in folders to get at something explorer will often crash before I can get there.

Here's a HijackThis log:

please post your topic in the malware forum (a link in my signature). Please take all the
preliminary steps. After the malware people confirm that the computer is clean, and if the problem persists, post back to this forum. It might take some time because they are quite busy there.

Some people have had success using Process Explorer to see what is running and deleting unwanted files.

http://www.microsoft...ssExplorer.mspx

Also several other ideas.
