>>You mean in msconfig keep Avast, zonealarm and one of the spyware programs [AVG or SuperAntispyware], right?

Yep...keep those.

I don't know if this will help or not but I would clean it out. 2 years...it is do for a cleaning. A P4 will slow down if it starts to overheat. Dust can cause it to overheat. You'll have to click the 'x' to clear the ad:

How much RAM do you have?

I have 512 MB of RAM.

I cleaned my laptop. Wow, it's so quiet now :whistling: should have done that earlier!

Still, turning on the laptop still takes about 8 minutes...mmh.

Your RAM is ok as far as startup goes, I would think. I used 256M for a couple of years and then bumped it up to 1G. What's left in msconfig that's still checked?

Thank you.
Do you think the messenger slows it down?
I've used it for the past two years and it didn't seem to have an effect on the startup speed before.

that msmsgs is for windows messenger so I guess that's different from the one your using and you can 'uncheck' it in msconfig.

Once this laptop is up and running, does it seem to be as fast as before or slower?

Overall, performance is ok... occasionally I feel that Firefox and Thunderbird don't respond as quickly as they could, but besides that it seems to be fine.
The CPU usage is now on the lower end.

I don't know if virtual memory would have any effect on startup or not. You might want to check it:

control panel>system>advanced>performance>settings>advanced

what is your total paging file size?

Do you use the laptop on a flat surface? If used on a carpet or bedspread, air won't be able to circulate under it and I would think it could overheat quickly. Which means the cpu will automatically slow down...
