I've experienced a significant slowing down of my system. Followed all your recommended steps. Ran Panda Activescan which identified, among other more benign things, the existence of the Banker.FTI trojan (?) on my hard drive. HijackThis file and uninstall list follow. Would appreciate any help in removing this. Thanks.

Hi

This infection steals passwords . I would suggest you change all passwords using a Non-infected computer (Not this one) and refrain from any credit card or financial dealings until clean. Contact any credit card or banks for possible fraud on your account.

Then please run SDFix

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Please post the SDFix log and a new HJT log.

I recommend removing Kazaa, P2P file sharing is a excellent way of picking up nasties,
Let me know if you want it removed.

There is another bad download on your system, so lets get rid of that, then we'll see what we can do about speeding up your system.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

How long has it been since you cleaned temp files, did a defrag and CheckDisk?

Thanks, Maranatha. The system speed already seems to have improved dramatically. I'm pretty good about keeping temp files out, but have not done the defrag or check disk in quite awhile I'm afraid. I thought I removed Kazaa and can't find it on my C: drive so, yes, I wouldn't mind having your help removing that. I followed your other steps, here's the new HJT log.

Hi aleonevoeh

I'm sorry I missed one to remove with HJT, Please do this first.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {9FB3908C-6565-4CB0-95F8-E9F85258723C} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HJT.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_09
SafeCast Shared Components
Screensavers Installer Version 2
Starware Screensavers Toolbar


Then reboot.


Lets get rid of Kazaa first.

First, Download LSPFix.exe to a convenient location. Do NOT run this program. This is only to be used if you lose Internet Access after removing Kazaa.

Next, download KazaaBegone.zip, and unzip it to a convenient location.

Run KazaaBegone

• Double click KazaaBegone from where you unzipped it.
• Select Search & destroy all installed components
• Click Go
• Close KazaaBegone

In the event that you lose Internet access after removing Kazaa, please double-click LSPFix.exe that you downloaded earlier. Check the "I know what I'm doing" button. You will see 2 panels. If there is any file listed in the "Remove" panel on the right-side, leave it as is and just click "Finish>>" then reboot your computer and you should now have access to the Internet. If nothing is listed under the "Remove Panel", do NOT do anything - just close the program. You will need to use another computer to come back here for further instructions on what to do.

Then please download this, and run it.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.


Then lets do a defrag and CheckDisk. This will take a while, so do it when you don't plan on useing you computer for a while.
Maybe at night just before you go to bed.
Here is how to run them. make sure you run them in the order given.

Defragment - Run this is safe mode. (recommended.)

Reboot into safe mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

1. Click Start, Double click My Computer.
2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, (C: Drive) and then click Properties.
3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4. Click Defragment.

After it is done Reboot.


CheckDisk

1.Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the local disk that you want to check. (C Drive)

2.Click Properties, and then click Tools.

3.Under Error-checking, click Check Now.

4.Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box. (2 boxes)

5.Click Start.

A window will open saying that it can not do chkdisk, will ask if you want to run it the next time you restart your computer.
Select "Yes"

Click on "Start" click on Turn off computer, Click Restart.

After completed.
Then check your system speed and let me know if it's better.
