Help!!!!

I just replaced the Motherboard with a new Abit KV7-V Socket A Motherboard and a new CPU chip (AMD Athlon XP 2900+ CPU 400FSB) Also at the time I replace the memory with a Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz Cl3. However now I can not get the computer to run windows. I had a problem before and they told me to I needed to replace the motherboard so I figure i better go with a good upgrade. BEFORE I would not even get a screen when I powered up. The fans would come on but nothing on the monitor. Well the problem is taken care of now but now windows is not working. I am sure that it is a Bios issue but I do not know what to do. I have a AVI All-in-Wonder Radeon 9000 PRO video Card which was on the computer before but seems to be working fine. Also the psu is a 350w so it should be enough watts. This is what the screen is saying right now:

I do have a 80 conductor cable running from both of the IDE connectors on the motherboard one to the hdd and the other to CD-rom.

If I hit F1 it flips a screen up checking devise then pops up a screen that

give me the option of going in
Safe mode
Safe mode with Networking
Safe mode with Command Prompt
Last known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Normally


Which none work they just bring me back to the first screen. However now instead of the "CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded" it has:
CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck - CPU SOFT MENU

I was just on the AMD spec site here and they don't list a XP 2900+ are you sure this is what you have? I need to know what fsb the cpu runs at, I know you said 400 fsb but are you sure?

If you are sure the proceed as follows

First clear the cmos by moving the cmos jumper to pins 2&3,wait 5 minutes then move it back to pins 1&2

Bootup and enter bios then enter soft menu under cpu operating speed select "user define"
Then under cpu fsb clock enter a value of 200 mhz
Now go back to the main bios screen and select Advanced chipset features then select Dram clock/drive controll, press enter and set a value of 200mhz

Now go back to the main bios screen and select Advanced bios features and set the first boot device to floppy and second boot device to cdrom and 3rd boot device to hdd

Now make sure you save and exit!

The bios will now be configuard properly for a 400 fsb cpu if you discover you have a 333 fsb cpu then clear the cmos again and repeat the above but enter values of 166 instead of 200.

You should now be able to boot from cd or directly from the hard drive.

I highly recommend you reinstall windows because of the motherboard change if you don't you may have driver issues and windows errors.

Also don't forget to load the chipset drivers that came on the motherboard cd.

One thing I missed, that psu may not be good enough the KV7 is power hungry and you need at least a 400w name brand psu, I have and recomend a Antec 430w true.

If the above post don,t workout you may have to get a better psu.

I bought the cpu, motherboard and ram from tigerdirect.com as a barebone system. Tiger direct advertized it as a "AMD Athlon XP 2900+ CPU 400FSB Bareton Core" here is the add for the cpu http://www.tigerdire...p?EdpNo=1123359
They say they do not sell them anymore go figure. I also saw this forum response on the Cpu http://forums.amd.co...showtopic=39800

I went to change the DRAM clock/Drive Control however it does not allow me to change the frequency. It says:
Current FSB Frequency 100MHz
Current DRAM Frequency 133MHz

Also when reloading windows XP do I need to format the drive or can I just reload windows over itself. I am trying to keep what is on my HDD.

I saved and exited out of bios then came back in and they both said 200MHz so that worked. I know put the cd for Windows xp into the cd-rom and it recognized it and the "Welcome to Setup" window came up. I want to save what I had on my Harddrive so Should I just repair it to get it going and them save What I want and then format and start over or should I reload Xp on the only existing partition. Would that cause issues if I do not format first? I am seeing progress

Go ahead and do the repair install, load the chipset drivers, get all MS critical updates except sp2.

Then backup your stuff, You could also slave the hdd in another computer and get your stuff, this would be safer.

If you do the repair install it could work just fine you will have to see but if there are errors or BSOD's we will have to go over the bios settings again first because there are some things that could need tweaked but if not then you will have to format and do a clean install.

This problem is not the board its more because Amd never officially released the chip (only as OEM) and Abit as well as other board manufactuers never upgraded there bios to accept this version. I don't think this will cause any problems other than getting the bios setup right. So keep me posted.

I did the repairs to windows xp and everything seems to be running ok right now. I am going to back up all the important stuff. Then I will format and reload. Seems to be working great for now I will keep posting. Thanks for all your help!!!!
I am getting right now some small application errors but I think I will be alright until I back everything up.

Your welcome, let me no how things are after the format, like I said there maybe a couple other bios ajustments if things ain't perfect.

I was just wondering when I format should I partition the drive. How does that help. If I do how much should I allow for Windows xp pro.

You do have to have at least 1 partition and thats all you really need some make several partitions, .i.e one for XP, one for game ,one for pics ect. Please read why

The only reason I know that you would have to have more than one partition is if you want dual boot for instance if you want to use window XP and windows 98 on the same computer.

I am not sure what size partition for xp pro you would have to ask around but 1 gig would be enough, me I just use 1 partition for everything.

If I might piggy-back here, ditto to the original poster - except that I run Linux. This is the hardest motherboard to install I've ever seen. Wow!

My problem is that, after I reset the CMOS, I still can't get into the bios. It hangs at that same old screen over and over and over. I can't update the bios until I can get it to boot.

I have replaced, removed, swapped and otherwise checked every connection I know of. Nothing.

Any ideas before I return this (&^*%$^%@$ motherboard. HELP! thanks for your help.

Try moving the CROM 1 jumper to pins 2&3 (strapping from hardware) and see if that helps.

What cpu do you have?
What psu?
I have to look at my notes I may have other ideas but try these and get back.
