Hello everyone, lately my cpu has been running slow, I have been cleaning as much as i can, trying to make my cpu faster, it wasnt intended to have loads of stuff on it, basically tried weeding all the spam/unnecessary programs out. however i do play a game called enemy territory, But it just takes longer to download the game or even sites for that matter. I have recently removed norton but i was told, i probably didnt remove all from registries and everything. I dunno where to post about cleaning leftover programs. ex. norton? anyway here is my HJT log, i also have combo scan downloaded, as that might help also. Thank you for your time....

Hello, grassi, and welcome to Geeks To Go. :whistling: Sorry about the delay, it's been pretty busy around here.

Let's start out with some general scans and see if there is anything hiding, since I don't see anything that pops out in your log.

1. Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesn't work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

2. After that, I will need to see two different logs from HiJackThis. The first is the normal log like you posted here. To get the other one, follow these directions.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Post back with those logs and we can continue from there.

If you have received help elsewhere or no longer need our assistance, please let us know.

Thank you so much for your reply, I became held up into work all of a sudden, and had to go away for 2 days.. Im really sorry i know i posted in the "im getting no reply section" but i wouldnt have if i knew this would happen. Again sorry and appreciate your time. I noticed in 1 of the hjt scan log, that there is duplicate s3 graphics, it looks like anyway and just wondering i think and hope my video card is working? I saw drivers for my Nvidia but just one thing mentioned, maybe thats all it says? Thought it would mention the card itself...Also Kaspersky didnt work, for me think it said i had lingering files and the new version wouldnt work correctly unless i deleted the old. Thought i did. So i went with BitDefender, which i believe found 13 viruses, i grabbed two different logs one longer then the other...

BitDefender-long version see attachment....or i have shorter version...

I don't see any signs of malware, besides those in the Java Cache. So, this should hopefully clear it out, and we can do another scan to make sure you are all clean.

1. Let's clear out your Java Cache.
  • Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new HijackThis log.

hello, as i did that deletion to my java, i had different options than was thought. Instead of 3 options to delete i had 2:"Application and Applets" and the 2nd was "trace and log files", i checked those 2 and clicked ok. There was also a "delete files" button in the javacontrolpanel/temp. file settings. which i clicked to delete.

You can fix the following line in HijackThis and it should cease to run on boot up:

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Other than that, your logs look clean. Do you have any other problems or questions? :whistling:

Yes, HijackThis will fix the registry entries that allow it run at startup.

I'm not sure why you would need to do that. You can delete the O16 entry, it's harmless, but not necessary.

If that's it, I'd like to leave you with some prevention notes. :whistling:

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visitmonthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
