Basic System Information
-Notebook
-Window Vista Premium
-Intel Core Duo
-T7200 2.00GHz
-2GB+ RAM
-32-bit operating system

Problem:
1) I uninstalled this software, which I barely remember, called winfly(or something started with a win).
2) Suddently a screen keep from Window Office 2003 keep poping up saying something of "configuring Office 2003". This happens everytime I open any program.
3) I tried to reinstalled it, but it doesn't seem to work(I did this three times). Afterward, I tried installing Office XP, but the error still pop up, this time instead of configuring Office 2003, it configuring Office XP. The Office 2003 can still work, but everytime I open any program, the configuring screen appear.
4) When I uninstalled Office(s)[XP and/or 2003] the configuring screen stop appearing.

Hi Empion!

Go ahead and install Office 2003 again. This time, choose the Custom option. You want to get to a screen that lists all the Office applications. Click the "hard drive" icon next to the top level "Microsoft Office". Choose "Run all from my computer". This should do it.

Please post the results.

The problem still persist. Is doesn't occur as much like last(happen everytime I open a software), instead it happen whenever I open MicrosoftWord. By the way, I tried complete install before. I think there is a software I am missing( the software said I uninstalled without knowing it could cause error), but I don't know how to replace it. I hope these extra informations help.
--Thanks, Nghia

Without knowing what the software was that you uninstalled that started all this, I'm kind of stuck.

But, I have seen this "Configuring... " error pop up after uninstalling software that migh/might not have integrated with Office. So, have you reinstalled with the Custom Setting I mentioned earlier? I think it's worth your time to do that.

Also, please check the Event Viewer for any other Errors or Warnings that occur at the same time that error pops up. To get to the Event Viewer, click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Services, Event Viewer. On the left side of the screen are three categories: Application, Security, and System. Check under Application and System for any events that are listed as Warnings or Errors, that also have a date and time that correspond to the error. Once you have an event open, you can click the "copy to clipboard" icon (just below the down arrow) to copy the error text, then you can paste it in a reply to this thread.

There might be something there that can give us some additional clues.

Have you tried completely uninstalling Office, rebooting and re-installing a fresh copy?

Yes, I did tried to follow your method, but the problem still persist. I also try completely remove Office 2003 and reinstalled it; it doesn't work. By the way, everytime I open a software/program, the configuring screen still pop up; I was wrong earlier. I tried to follow your instruction to get application, security, and system, but since I use window, your instructions does not apply(I use Window Vista). I tried to "save even as", but I can't upload that file onto here. Is there other ways?

Well, that's not good!!

Do you have a reliable anti-virus installed? Have you updated it and run a full system scan lately? If a lot of stuff shows up, please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty (and you may not be) then post a hijackthis log in THE MALWARE FORUM forum.
(Posting HiJack This logs in any other forum other than the malware forum is forbidden. If you post an HJT log in any other forum, it will be removed and it will take you longer to get help, so please make sure you only post HJT logs in the malware forum)

If you are still having problems after getting the "all-clear" from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas on this - don't use Vista yet. I'll have to try to get some additional eyes on it. Please be patient.

Yes, I use Norton Anti-Virus. It is up to date. The last time I scanned it was less than a week ago. I always set my Norton on. I only turn off Norton when I install something that require me to turn it off. Should I still go to malware forum? By the way, I tried repair Office 2003 several times, but it doesn't work. Thanks a lot. You did all you can, so I'm happy enough. I'll seek out other help.

Here are better instructions for opening Event Viewer:

Start, then Run, type eventvwr.msc and click "Ok". Click "Continue". Event Viewer will open.

What make/model is your laptop?

You direction lead me to the same place where the application and system located. I'm using a Lifebook notebook N6420 from Fujitsu. When I check around my the application and service log, there seem to be a lot of MSI problems. Does that give you any hint to what might be the problem?

ATTENTION: Besides the exasperating pop-ups that say configuring, here is more information about my problem which I forgot to mention earlier. There is another pop up saying
installing. Also, when the error screen 1719 appear when I try to turn off my computer say the following ****" Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. his can occur if the Window Installer is not corrrectly installed"**** I found this to be a remarkably important information. I hope this will solve the problem with your amiable assistance.

I apologize for the delay in responding. I've looked at the events you've provided and I don't see anything that would account for the installation issues you're experiencing with Office 2003.

The only things I can suggest at this point is a System Restore to a day prior to the problem occurring or perhaps a repair or reinstall of the operating system. See this link for additional information.

Good luck.

Before trying the repair or reinstall, you could try running SFC (System File Checker). It can fix certain issues in Windows where specific system files get corrupted, deleted, or infected. Basically the System File Protection watches the system files and checks their integrity against it's knowledge of what these files are supposed to look like. Generally if a system file get's "messed with" windows will let you know and give you the option to dissallow the change, sometimes you don't get this option though. The System File Checker is a command line utility that will initiate a scan of all the system files to make sure they are in their original state, present on the system, and or working properly. It's an easy tool to use but the user HAS to have an XP disk for it to work.

Do you have a valid Vista cd?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below

Start > Run > cmd then type

sfc /scannow (note the space)

Allow this to run until you get a message saying it is complete.

(thanks, bobmad, for reminding me)
