Norton 2003 Autoprotect

I had to reinstall Norton 2003 and since then the autoprotect feature is not active.I tried to active it by restarting the computer or manually or by "enable" as per the instructions of the Norton web site with no success.
Also I don't see the "icon" any more at the task bar.
Any ideas?
