Hello everyone, I'm sort of new at all of this, and I've been experimenting with MS-DOS. One thing that I can't seem to do is a remote shutdown. The two computers (Dell 4300 desktop computer, and a Dell Inspiron 8200 notebook), are hooked up in a network. We have a wireless internet connection for both computers.

The command prompt I have been trying to use is as follows:
shutdown -s -f -m \\Dell4300 -t 30

Accourding to what I've learned, this should do a forced shutdown on the Dell4300 in 30 seconds. I try this from my Inspiron 8200, and I am sure that I have the computer name for the desktop right. But every time I make the attempt, it tells me the network path was not found.

I use Windows XP home edition. Is something wrong with the command? Do I not have my network set up properly to do a remote shutdown? I would greatly appreciate anyone who can help.

I tried the command you said, but I'm having trouble with the domain name and password. In terms of a domain name, does it want the local computers name? If not, how can I get this domain name, or find out what it is. Whenever I try the comman it tells me that it cannot find the domain name, or it is a bad password.

Resolution: 1. use the runas command. To do this, type runas /u:domainname\username “shutdown –r –t xx –f –m \\remotepcname”, for example, runas /u:chicagotech\bob “shutdown –r –t xx –f –m \\ms-mvps”. Note: domainname can be domain name, workgroup name or computer.

2. Alternatively, you may use this command: net use \\remotepcname password /u:domainname\username and then shutdown –r –t xx –f –m \\remotepcname.

3. If above commands don't work and you receive System error 67, make sure you type the correct commands and computer name. If you receive system error 53, make sure the Server service and Computer Browser service are running.

Yes, you go to a command prompt and type "shutdown -a"

How do i figure out the remotepcname?

To figure out a computer's name, go to Start and then Control Panel. Make sure your switched to the classic view, and click on System. In the system menu, there should be a tab up top that reads "Computer Name"

Hi everyone,

I was having the same problem, but i have gotten closer thanks to you guys. But i still have a slight problem, i was hoping you could help. When i type runas /u:domainname\remotename "shutdown -s \\remotename it asks for the password of the computer.... But when i type the password of either one of my two users on the computer it says error unable to runcommand 1326: unkown username or bad password. And just to check i typed in a computer name that wasnt even on my network and it asked for a password lol. what should i do. (I also tried the net use command and couldnt get it to even get that close.)
