based on what you have told me in the chat room here is what I recommend you do.

click on start then choose run. in the box that shows up type msconfig

now click on the startup tab and remove the check from everything except your antivirus.

Next click on save. it will ask you to restart your system clickon yes. now go through the same process that you usually do that causes the crash. then after a successful startup, click on start>run>msconfig. add one program and reboot, do teh same process over again until you have found the cause of your crash, if it happens on the first try, then recheck everything and post here.

I tried going to start/run/msconfig and... It wasn't there! Then I did a search for msconfig and it didn't show up. Can I assume from this that my OS has somehow become corrupted?

With this in mind I tried to reinstall Windows 2000, but the install program on the CD says it can't go from SP4 (which I downloaded and installed) back to SP2 (which is on the disk). Should I uninstall SP4 and then reinstall Windows SP2 on top of itself, or would this be likely to lead to even more problems?

Meanwhile, it crashed again when I tried to run a Java applet (as an ecard) on a website shortly thereafter.

All suggestions gratefully received!

yes it is possible that your OS has become corrupted, I'm not familiar with win2000, does that have a repair option avialable on the install disk?

I don't think so... Not easily, anyway.

Meanwhile, a friend sent me a copy of msconfig, which doesn't come with W2K. I installed it and unchecked paperport, quicktime and mobipocket from the startup screen. I have a strong suspicion that paperport is the culprit. If I can go any length of time without another crash, I'll try adding back the QT and mobipocket features. Will post the results of this test here.
